TD6 fuel pump query

This afternoon I replaced the under bonnet diesel pump on my parents 2001 Freelander 1 TD4 . It had got to the point of give the pump a hit to get the car running. My dad made a comment that he used to hear the pump whirring before the car started but the old one had gone quiet over time. He also stated that the engine seemed quieter with the new pump.
I had ordered the pump for my TD6 as a possible cure to engine loosing power when WOT under load but their need was greater. I have ordered another pump.

So my question
Should I hear the pump running on my TD6 before I start the car, at present I don't. But this is the quietest car I have ever owned and I dont even hear the suspension compressor.

You will not hear the HP pump in the engine bay at all but the underbody pump on the L322 that sits on the passenger side next to the fuel tank should be audible. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
