Advice re changing Reg plates and V5s

I'm sure someone here knows how to do this in the most efficient manner: (Need to know this for when I change my car)

Issue:

1 x RR with a private plate on and current V5

1 x RR freshly purchased, waiting for full V5 with boring reg number,

Question:

Can I transfer my private reg onto the new car before the DVLA send me the new V5, or, do I have to put my plate on retention, so I can swap it over after I get my revised V5 for new car?

What's the best way to do this? Essentially I want my old car in a position to sell it, i.e. no private plate on Discovery 4 HSE

You just need both V5's.

I've just done this.

Let me see. Probably not the most efficient way, but advised by the dealer.

PX old FF. Keep V5 for tax rebate and put plate on retention. Hand dealer cheque for £105 to cover transfer. Wait for new FF V5 to arrive in my name and dealer changes plates 2-3 weeks after handover when V5 gets delivered to me.

I'm sure it could be done quicker. I'm sure you have to visit a DVLA office to do the retention certificate to new car swap as well, which is why I got the dealer to do it. Si. <This is my name.

^ Question

Best to wait for new V5 then do it.

Cool, thanks chaps.

There is much stuff spinning around my head at the moment, not least which type of Range Rover to go for next.

Got a test drive in a 5.0 SC in the morning though.... Big Cry I know how it's going to end.... Discovery 4 HSE

You'll buy it. Laughing

I'll be buying one, possibly even next year. Si. <This is my name.

After driving the 5.0 SC in the new Sport at the weekend and V-Maxing it to 155mph on the JLR track at Gaydon, I am addicted. Bet it doesn't sound anywhere near as good though. Discovery 4 HSE

Probably not, but 5 litres, V8 and 500bhp are very strong incentives to buy one. Laughing

The exhaust note can always be massaged by a good professional if required. Si. <This is my name.
