i've just received and temporally set up a ptz dome camera ..its has a 27x zoom and 420 tv line resolution and my question is should i keep this jobby or exchange it for a 3x zoom/700 line ptz camera..
its to replace a fixed camera and to monitor the front of the house/driveway..

Depends what you want to do with it really - are you recording it ? Do you really need a zoom ?

I have a bunch of 420 line cameras - all recording onto a PC & the quality of those seems OK to me.

700 would be better - I use 1080 for video of the kids, but I'm going to sit & watch that.....

does that have a zoom Jim?.. Laughing

@Alistair, i was particularly curious in the 420 tvl resolution compared to the 700 tvl....zoom is pretty much a must hence the sway towards the 420 tvl .. ... - .- -.

well do you use pr set points, has it got tracking, i find that the recorder lets the image down, you find it ok to watch its when you need to view some thing that has been recorded and then start to zoom in on the recording and the picture goes to pot, i the pre sets so the camera does a tour, points to the back gate then zooms in,waits and the zooms out and of the the next point, or if i leave it on auto track it will follow any thing that moves and zooms in on it,follows and then zooms out.. V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

i would be using the zoom manually at first .....and do you not need a dvr to track/scan? .. ... - .- -.

most ptz cameras have programable presets and will run a tour on its own, they can all so autotracking built in, do you have a keyboard, V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

its a basic maplins jobby with a very small ptz control....tbh i've not explored the menu in depth so it might have some kind of auto tracking.
my main concern is the picture quality of a 420 tvl against a 700 tvl taking in the fact that the 420 will have a 27x zoom and the latter only a 3x zoom... ... - .- -.

Depends if you really need to zoom - if you do then go for the 27x

Any recording software will let you zoom in, but you'll loose quality pretty quickly when you do - so if your camera does 3x, by the time you're at say 5x with software, you would be at less than 400 lines anyway - if that makes sense.....

it does indeed Alistair, i found a web forum site where they reckon a 700 tvl with a 3x zoom is no better [when zoomed] than the one i have now [420 tvl/27x zoom]

i have it fixed up and its not to bad..our monitor is about 4 foot away so you get a reasonable picture..zoom is fun to play with except for the push button ptz control so i'll be looking for a joystick type .. ... - .- -.
