2006 Range Rover Supercharged 4.2 SC V8 Tonga Green

Replacement Alternator

I have a high pitched whine that rises and falls in line with the engine rpm. It started being intermittent a couple of months ago and was mainly evident under high electrical load.

I must admit I've not investigated thoroughly yet, but presume it is the Alternator or one of the belt tensioner.

I've found YLE000040W here for £82.24 This seems like a VERY reasonable price for a new unit. It says surcharge, that just means I have to send them mine doesn't it? Am I being fail and not reading the whole thing correctly and it's actually £400 plus the surcharge of 82!?

I had to have a new one last year, £577 including labour at my local independant.

The V8 has a water cooled alternator and they had trouble getting one, LR had none.

I believe it's a watercooled jacket that the alt' sits in. I've e-mailed these people and asked if they have stock etc.

I think they are probably referring to JUST the surcharge price there - i.e. the cost NOT to send your old one back.

Well that sucks.

So high picthed whine in line with RPM's someone tell me it's NOT the alt bearing? Voltage is fine at the mo btw.

Could be a bearing in the tensioner, idler pulley or water pump. I have just replaced my water pump because of a noisy bearing and slight leak at 135000 miles.

In total contrast to these crazy Range Rover prices.. I just priced up an uprated alternator for my Mini.... £59.67 2006 Mercedes CLS
1991 Retro-style Mini
But really finding it hard to fight the urge for a S/C...

I'll get it checked out after payday! Shouldn't be the water pump as it was only replaced a few months ago, that died with a clackety racket!
