Sorry Gaz,

I was just doing the sensible/money side of it.

I wasn't saying there were Ffrr comparable on anything other than the numbers of running for high mirages.

Ie get an ff for £18k and spend £1k on a motorway muncher that will do double the mpg if not better and have even more money in the pocket for the next ff upgrade or to pay it off even quicker if on finance... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

KP and Gaz, that is exactly my current scenario, I have an old TD6 that is for towing, horse stuff etc. and an Audi S6 ostensibly for work purposes/miles. However every morning I jump in the RR as its by far the best place to be, especially on a rain soaked motorway.

I toyed with the SC option but I know I would always use it as opposed to a 'barge' ! resist everything apart from temptation and all that.

KP, you are correct as I have calculated breaking even via the mileage allowance from our ever giving government, and more importantly I will enjoy it!!

Thanks for all opinions, looked at a black/black TDV8 VSE this afternoon however only 1st service at LR and rest at unknown independent so will leave that one, will have to venture over the border methinks......

I agree with Gaz. I've done around 15,000 (very comfortable) miles in my TDV8 in the year I've had it.
I would hate to have done that amount of miles in a "motorway muncher", only to use the RR at the weekends and suffer from backache. Thumbs Up Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

This has turned into a bit of a td6 bashing thread.

I think it all depends on what you want and can afford.

Now i don't earn mega money, and all i have owned are average eurobox cars and classics with little luxury. I also have a long term affinity with landrover products and what they stand for.

I had a 15k budget, and wanted to buy a keeper. Something i can take overlanding with a roof tent, but most importantly be able to fix when it goes wrong.

If i had saved a little longer i could have gone for a high miler low end tdv8, and i did test drive a few. The engines are far nicer to drive, there is no question about that. And i did consider the gearbox issue, that can be mitigated with modifications to the gearbox.

But i went for a very honest, good condition TD6 VSE and i am very happy with it. It is the nicest car i have owned, It is slightly underpowered if you live in a hilly area, and because it has to work harder it is a little noisy under certain circumstances. But these problems can also be reduced (i will be getting a JE remap, an "eco tune" tcm mod and if necessary a more soundproofing).

As i said earlier, the maintainability was/is a large consideration for me, for example injectors of ALL modern diesels have a life of around 100k td6 new are £180, so worse case scenario 1080. For the tdv8 they are around £200 so £1600. The alternator on a td6 you can replace in a couple of hours, the tdv8 is a nightmare engine wise to work on. Has tha added complexity of terrain response, two turbos (unless im mistaken). All in all the Td6 is "diyable" on the drive with not a stupid amount of special tools. The TDV8 is not.

barracuda, thanks for that, as mentioned I have had a TD6 for 7 years and am happy with the package, i now want something for myself which will be another 5/7 year car if possible, we are all seduced by new technology/power etc, however i am not really bothered about that as I could live with the TD6 package happily, I also live on a farm up a horrendous dirt track so am aware of the noise/gearbox issues etc.

However, I don't want to stay with what I know if there is something better out there, thats why I am throwing it open, otherwise I would stilll be in my 1972 VW Beetle (good at drifting, or is that just my memories) Very Happy 2013 L405 Autobiography Baltic Blue

I would say the TDV8 is very easy to live with, running costs are not bad. The only issue comes if things go wrong. I have a Warranty Direct warranty and then there is just things like the air suspension to keep in mind.

All round driving gets me an average of 25 mpg without being careful.

Insurance isnt bad but road tax is a bit annoying!

Mine is a May 07 and has just aced it's MOT.

I have a post somewhere on here where I have listed all the costs on the car to date and I have done another 10,000 miles since then and has not been back to the garage.

A good one is a great car, I am only selling mine as I am a full on petrol head and miss the sound of a petrol V8 burble. Stupid I know but there we are.

A good TDV8 is very very easy to live with and in the words of Top Gear, all the car you would ever need.
Just have a slush fund for anything non warranty covered. Mind you if you have a well behaved one you know and love, why change it?

My TD6 hasnt been too bad to be honest for motorway munching.
bought august 2011 with 124k on the clock and today it has 147k on the clock.

Just buy on condition dont forget and always check the rear arches and upper tailgate Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
