I would like to spend several weeks next winter in Portugal and having a couple of collies, my options, as I see it are to buy a motorhome or a caravan, a caravan would be cheaper to purchase and we would have a car to use once down there but our L322 is a 2002 V8 with 106000 miles ( LPG) and although I have had it for 4 years and it has been fine as far as reliability goes, there is a little voice in my head saying don't do it, so what do think the odds are for making the 3000 mile trip without a major problem

You can have a problem with anything - who's to say the motorhome would do any better.

I'd just make sure you take out good breakdown cover & go for it

Mine's a 2003 TD6 with similar miles. Just been to Scotland and back from Switzerland with a 3500kg trailer - loaded on the way back. Had no problems.

Wouldn't want to do it without cover though.

Thanks for the replies, maybe I am loosing faith because of all the bad press LR gets and the complexity of these vehicles, as for LR reliability for the last 30 out of 32 years I have had only 5 Land Rovers (3 RR 2 Discoverys) so I for one have had very good service out of my vehicles.

Remember that most major European cities have a Landrover main dealer, so not too different to the UK, you need a breakdown / recovery service plus cover for an overnight stay if required and repatriation should the worst happen.

100,000miles is nothing on a modern well maintained car these days. You've had it for four years so you know it's a good one.

Simple answer: get it serviced properly and take the L322 - it will be a breeze.

I drove around Ireland last year with a 26ft 1850kg caravan on the back, plus a trip to Weymouth then two further trips to Ireland without the caravan- mines an 02 td6 with 111,000 on the clock.
Planning on going to France this year.

Just get good breakdown, i would suggest caravan club mayday if you are taking a van, only heard good things, and they are geared up for caravans of all lengths, whereas the others may have a length limit.

I would suggest getting a oil service and full filter changes before going along with getting the coolant checked, but otherwise it should be fine.

Im off to France in mine with the van in august and i am paranoid that it will be the alternator which packs up as its at about 55k now. Also off to le mans and it might go then as well.

It is under warranty at the moment so if it went it would be covered, but it would be a pain in the proverbial if i was away at the time. So do I pre-empt the failure by swapping the alternator and pay for it, or take the punt and the inconvenience, albeit minimal cost whilst on holiday........  There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I do not know how old the gearbox is, when I bought the vehicle from stratstone with 70k on the clock it had all the stamps in the book but no more information, this is my first auto, I actually went out to buy a toureg manual because I was so against autos but that's another story, therefore my experience of autos is nil however I had the oil and filter changed and flushed 3 years ago 20k miles ago and it seems to do everything it should without complaint but do they just go bang and that's it or do they give you any warnings. I did briefly think about a 3.6 TDV8 but that would have mileage where problems could be round the corner, so are you better sticking with what you have got and know?

When i bought mine it had a few gremlins all of which i have now sorted, so am pretty confident bar the alternator, that it will do the job.

If you go out and buy a motorhome it could have issues, dependant on age/mileage, at least with a caravan you are fairly confident that the tug part of the outfit is sound and if you have had the fluid changed in the box, and had no subsequent problems, then all should be fine and dandy.

I would give the car a good once over, check for leaks from diffs, trans box, etc etc. Have it had the diff and transfer box oils done. if all is fine and there is nothing leaking, and you have a tow bar, then get the caravan, as you say you will if nothing else have a car at the other end, and not have to try and park/navigate a mh through ancient european towns, not to mention having to pack it up every time you want to go anywhere.

Oh and yes, i have a tin tent, and think its ace.......  There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

northernmonkeyjones has raised a valid point re small Eurupean towns.Living here for 10 years now, in a country ares, I am very careful as to what route I take through smaller villages. In Tarouca ( oldest monastery in Iberian Peninsula) I had to reverse with about 12 smaller vehicles behind me, due to a sudden narrowing in the road. Local infrastructure often not so marvellous, at times.I would hesitate to take a motor home, unless sure you would not want to visit smaller aldeia's.
