Some more info on the gearbox behaviour. This morning I tried it in automatic for a change to see how it does. It may be nitpicking but it could also provide additional clues.

When I go from neutral to drive, it takes a little too long for my liking for it to engage drive and it does so with a little jolt. The same with reverse, just a little too long and a small jolt.

When it drives in D, the gear changes are a little "hesitant", like it doesn't want to shift up and it seems to take a tiny bit too long. The gear changes are smooth but "slowish" and the 4-5 doesn't go unless you are accelerating a bit.

Manual/tiptronic gear changes are smooth and not "hesitant" and the 4-5 upshift only works when accelerating and not on stationary throttle.

I have this niggly feeling that there may be a lowish pressure issue that causes the hesitant shift, aggravated by the one EPRD of the 4-5 upshift not being entirely right. Or maybe I'm just noticing "everything". MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Eugene,

The fact that you noticed such a difference when swapping the solenoids around does seem to indicate that there is a fault with at least one of them, though clearly the transmission altering its adaption settings while you’re trying to evaluate any changes does make it harder to be sure. Can your Faultmate clear the adaptions?

I’d be happy to send you a few used solenoids to try, though 300 Euros for a complete new set (is that for all seven?) does sound like a bargain. They can be bought individually for around US$100 a piece in the US (ZF part numbers 0501 213 959 (blue cap), 0501 213 960 (yellow cap), for example : http://www.thectsc.com/index.php?p=product...parent=52)

Hi Phil, I will reset the adaptive values tonight and do a little test drive to see how that works.

I have sent an email to the parts supplier in Holland asking them about the solenoid kit they offered and waiting for an answer now.

When you read my description, do you have the idea that it could also be something else, like pressure issues?? MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Update : reset the adaptive values tonight.

Result got a 2-3 upshift fault first but after some driving that could not be replicated anymore (looks like it learned enough to make it fine).

4-5 upshift fault, got less as the adaption went but can still be replicated. Will do some more driving in the coming days.

Neutral to D or R is "slow" and gives a little jolt. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Haven't driven the car a lot but took it out this morning to go to work. The 2-3 upshift is not great yet and the same for the 4-5 upshift. The rest of them seem fine. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Came back from leave last night and the FFRR fired immediately despite sitting idle for a full month.

The drive was uneventful, the 2-3 shift generated a fault today and the 4-5 is still not great but good enough.

I still haven't decided whether to go for the full rebuilt Mechatronic or just the coil set. I have read that the coils as matched to the Mechatronic at the factory or rebuilder and am not sure if the ECU can cope with the changes to the new coils.

What do you think Phil ??

What do the others think ?? (300 Euro for a set of coils and 1000 Euro for a complete refurbed Mechatronic) MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Eugene,

It’s easy for me to make suggestions when it’s your money at stake! You saw the general condition of your valve block when you had it apart. Did it do much running with the coolant contaminating the transmission fluid? It did seem to make a significant difference when you swapped the solenoids around – I guess the question is ; was that due to a factory calibration issue or to a solenoid fault? Although the solenoid flow characteristics are calibrated to the individual valve block and its ECU at the factory I’m not convinced that it’s worth the 700 Euros price difference. I’d personally go for the solenoids only, on the basis that they’d still be sellable for 50 Euros each on eBay afterwards if it didn’t work out Smile . I’ve attached below the procedure that Jaguar recommends for re-adapting the 6HP26 after a software reset.

Thank you very much Phil. I have the solenoid set on order (they shipped this morning) after a long talk with the transmission rebuilders in Holland. In their experience and based on what we found out with the swap of the coils it is most likely only the coils. They also find this issue to be "quite common" with this transmission and it is one of the first things they replace with generally good results.

I didn't realize I could still sell the coils afterwards Smile So that is a good thing to my Dutch nature if I had to go for a full Mechatronic.

As soon as I have the new coils installed, I will do the procedure that you attached and report back here what the results are Smile

Thanks for the help again !!!

By the way, since I don't have any use for the parts you sent me, would you like them back ?? MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

It may be a bit early to cry victory but I'm going to anyway.

This lunch break I picked up the FFRR with the new coil set installed and despite the adaptive values not being reset yet and the adaptive driving cycle not done yet it is a million times better than it was Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I drove home in D only, not manual shifting needed whatsoever. The jolt on going from neutral to drive or reverse is completely gone already, the gear shifts are so much better, some of them I hardly notice at all (only looking at the rev counter) and not a single instance that even came close to the previous "bangs" and of course no transmission faults either.

Although the drive was short, it passed all the "pain points" with no issues.

I will keep y'all posted on the (hopefully final) close out of this issue that has been plaguing me for many months. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
