I miss my old RR....

So.

There is the L322 sitting my drive way. It is fast, comfortable, shiny, gleaming. It grips the road, it just took us to Switzerland and back, handled snow, ice, small tracks, motorways with effortless poise, the seats were warm, the stereo system is fab, and if I got bored looking at snowy Alps I suppose I could have simply climed into the back and watched a DVD.

Faultless.

And yet.....

.......I miss my old P 38 with every fibre.

I miss the deep, melodic wooof-woof-woof of the V 8 engine. There wasn't a day I had that car that its lovely engine sound didn't make me smile. I miss that that car didn't constantly beep, bleep or want to communicate with me. I miss not having to constantly tell it to switch " display off" , since there was no intrusive display to switch off. I miss the total quiet in the cabin when the engine was turned off as there wasn't a constant whirr and buzz of a fan going. I miss that the car not only reliably told me if a door wasn't properly shut, but which door it pertained to. I miss that the access height if the boot was significantly lowere thereby making it easier and less strenuous for a dog to jump in and out. I miss the burr walnut trims and the worn but incredibly comfortable thick leather seats.

The new model....it is fab in its own rights. But it leaves me cold. Stone cold. Rather than a treasured object of passion and affection, like its 2 predecessors, to me its just a vehicle taking me from A to B. Its bling and sterile. The supercharged engine sound just doesn't do it for me.

I would have been gutted, floored if someone had stolen my trusty old P 39. I can honestly say, I couldn't care less if I woke up and the new one was gone. Its insured. And its just a car.

Where am I going with this, you may collectively wonder. Dunno, really. I suppose its a love letter to my old car. Given the chance I trade the new one for my old one without blinking an eye. And I wouldn't give a monkeys about market values and mileage.

Has anyone ever yearned for their old car whilst the newer & snazzier model sat unloved on their driveway?

We are now 5 years and x3 L322 on from our P38. Would we go back to a P38 - In a heart beat !! We still woo when we see a nice one and remanis of all the good times we had and also features such as the leather seats and general bomb proof interia compared to the paint covered plastics of the L322.

However times move on and the fact that even the very last P38 are now 5 years older and knowing what we know from our own ownership experience you have to move on.

The L322 drives better, heating, lighting etc all better. But like all modern versions of cars some of the soul has gone. 2013 L405 AB 4.4SDV8 Luxor/Ivory, 2007 Vogue TDV8 Epson Green/Sand, 2008 Vogue TDV8 Buckingham Blue/Sand, 2003 Vogue 4.4 LPG Epsom Green/Sage, 1998 Vogue SE 4.6 LPG Epsom Green/Cream

I've never rated the P38, but then I've never had one or even been in one. I'm obviously missing something.

I think I'm a 'looking forward to the next car' kind of person.

Know what you mean about the bongs and it never turning off.

Rolling Eyes I know what you mean. I miss all my old Rangeys. my P 38 R730 JPN for instance. I saw it for sale on ebay. she looked a mess. It choked me to see her like that, old style 16inchers instead of the painted 18inch hurricanes that I fitted. Engine overheating, probably heads.
I wanted to buy her but my missus said no. (if she carries on like that she's going to be getting her P45 in place of my P38!!!!!! Rolling with laughter )
Then there was my L322 4.4 vogue MM52 CRK in Zambezi. She was superb. Coped with the floods without a problem and rescued a few stranded motors.
Then all my classics PHE 6R (2dr classic masai red) G155 CHF (black 3.5 vogueSE) L760 ORW (Black LSE) G188 TNC (3.9 Vogue SE in Westminster) H23 CCA (3.9 Vogue SE in Westminster). Does anybody know if these are still around?
I won't even start on the discos, freelanders, and series motors !!!

If we could keep all the old cars and not have to PX or sell them then we would all need a field to keep them in.

I hanker for my old M3 and E39 Beemers however times roll on and i realise that im not going to have them again. I reckon if i drove an e36 M3 now i would think it was pants.

I used to love driving the mrs skoda (fast, comfy and massive) however it just feels cheap and plasticky after the FFRR.

I reckon it would be the same with a P38. They were comfy and well specced for their day, but were underpowered by an engine designed decades previously, and the interiors were nice but not as nice as a ff, i would think that getting into one after living with a FFRR would feel a little underwhelming.

If you long for the v8 woofle, buy a v8 ff and at least some of the P38's charm will endure, along with the fuel bills. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Not sure I understand what you mean by the P 38 not being a FFRR. What were they then?? They weren't a variant of a Range Rover like the RR Sport. They were THE Range Rover of their day......but perhaps I misunderstand the FFRR term.

Equally, I'm drawing a blank - but am intrigued! - what you mean by suggesting "buy a v8 ff and at least some of the P38's charm will endure".

My current L322 is a V 8. ( 4.2 supercharged). There isn't a remote hint of the P 38's beautiful V 8 engine sound. Most likely drowned by the high pitched whine of the supercharger. The petrol costs in comparison to the P 38 are quite eye watering ( not a fair comparison, I know. The new car is MUCH faster).

So....which model were you referring to with the above?

in regards to the V8 engine, i think the reference is to this one:
4.4 L Jaguar AJ-V8 2006 - 2009
305 hp (227 kW) @ 5750 rpm, 325 lb·ft (441 N·m) @ 4000 rpm

I know the p38 was the ff of its day, but i was under the impression that the term "full fat range rover "' refers to the l322 only. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I too loved my P38 but now have an L322 TD6. Would I go back probably not as the L322 is so much nicer car all round. Would have loved to have been able to keep my P38 but financially couldn't afford to. My P38 was very neat & tidy . One of the better ones I had seen. Yes miss the V8 rumble too. O well memories

The trick is not to sell your old one... I still have my Classic, and won't ever part with it. I have driven a few P38's but I never really rated them compared to the late Classics, so never bothered with one. The FF really made me smile, so that's what I bought.

When I replace this one, I'll probably still keep it - chop the guards out, stick some decent muddies on it and turn it into (another) bush pig.... Very Happy

Only ever sold one Landy - my first - a IIA. I still regret it, so I'll never do it again...

SWMBO has got used to the idea I think... Laughing

Thank you. Will keep my eyes peeled for one just to see if I'd emotionally connect with it

Say, your avatar....are these YOUR Bernese? We've had Berners well....since forever ( I grew up in Switzerland, so for me they are a piece of home. Aside from being the most fab dogs, of course). Hand on my heart, my last Berner boy would refuse pointblank to set paw in anything but a RR. On the one hand this peculiar vehicle specific stubbornness drove me barmy....on the oher hand I thought "atta boy, you've got good taste!)

That's funny, my friends dog is terrified of my RR.

Check out Bear and Lily - they're lovely.

Harrup,

I miss my '98 HSE like crazy and I though I was alone so until now, I've kept my dirty little secret quiet!

While I am sure that my '04 Vogue is a far better machine, it is just soulless and boring and just doesn't feel 'special' every time I get in it.

If it were stolen tomorrow, I'd probably be the happiest man alive as I could buy a late model P38 and spend the difference keeping it on the road for a year. And it would be worth every penny!
