Problems to look for buying a ffrr

On the edge of buying a 54 plate vogue with 100,000
It's immaculate with full history
(Or a disco 3, ahem) Rolling Eyes (less miles and larger boot with seats folded)
Getting worried now, the more I look the more I read (most people who post reviews on web post bad reviews me thinks)
But seeing quite a lot about gearbox issues
But also moaning about them being in the garage more than not
And costing ; my defender has cost me nothing in six years, relatively so guess I've been lucky
What say you merry fellas?

In my experience no guarantees whatever you buy. Even new cars can be lemons.

I paid £48k for an 11 month old Porsche Cayenne, from a main dealer.
Had loads of niggles, but worst was a gearbox fault. Required a new "valve chest" for £000'S fortunately had
Pork warranty. Paid £8k for an Audi, only to find the Internet full of sad owners suffering from the multitronic gearbox....
Mine failed a few months later... £2k repair... Shocked

On the plus side, saw a post on here of a mechanic servicing Full Fats with over 200k miles !!
I am hoping that as a £60/£70k car these are screwed together better than most

Buy on condition, not miles, more history the better. Ideally with loads of old bills that indicate it was looked after?

Maybe assume you need a rainy day fund if worst case scenario happens? Rolling Eyes

^+1. Buy on condition. Have a fund there for repairs. Worst case scenario would be a new gearbox. £2000+/- a bit. The engines V8's and TD6's are good engines. I haven't seen or heard of many engine failures. Look long and hard and don't be afraid to walk away if you don't think it's right. I'm sure there are local members to you who would have a look at a cr if it was to far to travel just to turn away. I sold mine last week as my money fund had gotten to low and if I had any major issues I would have been Censored . Loved the car but had come to carry to many what it's and I opted for the simple life. You say a 54 plate .... Right on the cusp of the early touch screen models ?
Is the one you are looking at newer model?

What's this about a transferable warranty then?

The TD6 gearbox valve body seems to be the weak point (literally Wink ) and a new box should ideally be fitted with the Sonnax upgraded components.

The ZF gearbox is much better indeed (although they have their issues as well, but far fewer).

Any gearbox can have issues mine does (but that may be software or fluid level or even temperature) and I am researching it at the moment and this range of ZF boxes in other cars as well (BMW/Audi/VW/Jag etc.) seems to have a similar issue along the range but mostly liveable or resolved with a fluid/filter change and software update.

There are no guarantees on cars, I have had a lot of different cars and you just need to get lucky. I would suggest go for a MY2006/2007 if the budget allows (sorry not idea on plate numbers/years in the UK) with a ZF gearbox. Go on condition as everyone says as good maintenance can keep any car going for a long time while bad maintenance kills even the strongest car eventually.

Diesels -
Td6 cars - GM 5 speed - upto & incl. 06 MY
After that . . .
TdV8 cars - ZF 6 speed
Petrols -
BMW 4.4 - ZF (I think ?) 5 speed - upto & incl. 05 MY
Jag (AJV8) 4.4 - ZF 6 speed
Jag (AJV8) 4.2 S/C - ZF 6 speed

Bottom line is that you don't have a choice of gearbox with a car fitted with the Td6 engine -

Be sensible and don't go for the first one (unless it's amazing)

Remember that the FFRR has lots of toys and its easy to be blinkered. Try everything electrical to check it works, look at the condition of the seat edges, pedals, steering wheel, these will give an indication as to how hard a life its had.

Drive it Shocked Make sure it doesn't thump about and clonk. You'll know if its smooth or not. If you can, take along someone to be impartial, if you can, take along someone who knows RR's!

At 100K there's still plenty of life left in a TD6, but you may want to budget for a gearbox flush and a full oil and fluids change, maybe new pads and discs or tyres depending on when they were last done. I would notionally put aside a grand to do preventative maintenance and maybe a few fixes (You'd spend more on a LR Warranty every year) Discovery 4 HSE

I am just waiting to collect my 54 plate with 98k, lovely example and well looked after locally all it's life and drove like the smoothest car I've ever been in, it was the first one I saw so I thought why waste anymore time and sealed the deal! Go for it buddy and enjoy!

Just my tuppence ha'penny worth. I used Matt Stevenson's Purchase Checklist (see Joe90's post in the following thread for the link) and checked each item in turn.

They are complicated beasts and IMHO its much more important to check everything is working properly - try thinking about the price of a transfer box motor (circa £1300) that you miss by not checking Hi/Lo range whilst worrying about the possibly that a good working gearbox is about to fail.

United States 2005 Range Rover HSE 4.4 V8 Chawton White

Bearing in mind that the US & UK model years don't match...
The first 3 years of the run had the BMW 4.4L "petrol".
Those vehicles (at least here in the US) use the ZF 5-speed auto-box.

For US residents, those are model years 2003 - 2005.
US model year 2006 was the first year of the jag V8. Jim
