Ignition fault

Hi all, I've been experiencing an intermittent fault with my RR, it's a 55 plate Vogue 3.0 Td6. Every now and again when you turn the key, it won't start and there is a buzzing noise from centre of gear stick console. However, if you bridge the trigger on the starter to the live feed then the car starts no problem. I'm guessing there is a problem between the ignition switch and starter trigger.

So I've decided to install a push button start to replace the position 3 on the key and bypass all the land rover wiring as I've tested the ignition barrell, What I plan to do is remove the centre cig lighter in the front for the ignition live feed and install the button in its place, (already got the perfect sized momentary open switch, it looks facotry in the console) I'll the run the wire through the bulkhead and straight onto the starter trigger switch.

I was wondering if anyone knew a location on the passenger side of the dash where I could run the cable through the bulkhead what to remove to get to this and any thoughts on this.

Cheers

Cheers Stan, hopefully it's a straight shot once I take that out, I currently have barely any dash as it is, all that's left is top panel, facias and glove box '55 Java Black Vogue

if your dash is in that state then it would be interesting if you can find another route through the bulkhead, this will help other members who want to run a cable through.. ... - .- -.

I'll put some pics up of the route I find for the cable and if it's something people are interested in, maybe a how to guide. '55 Java Black Vogue

Right, button is wired in, took a feed from battery to switch and then onto starter trigger. The switch will turn the starter but it sounds as if the solenoid hasn't pushed it out to engage the flywheel, is there a seperate trigger for this as I shoved a screwdriver down to the trigger and bridged it onto the live feed to starter and we had lift off. (without using the button)

any ideas? '55 Java Black Vogue

It looks like the starter isn't receiving the full 12v supply needed so I'm going to install a relay switch further down the cable.

I'll take a live feed from the starter battery connection cable, run it through the solenoid straight onto the starter solenoid. I'll then use the push button to control the relay instead of sending the charge to the starter. '55 Java Black Vogue

You ain't trying to power the starter motor, ie the big battery cables, with the push button switch by any chance are you? Shocked that would maybe explain why the starter is not engaging. either that, your battery might be going flat. the starter will have a solenoid built in that has a small wire to switch it. thats what you want to connect your push button switch to. remember to take the power for your push button switch from the ignition though. if you take it from the battery then the engine will be able to turn over without the ignition switched on. '04 td6 se

Im running my signal (power) cable from the battery through the push button start onto the solenoid for the starter motors actuator not the battefy power cable. when Im turning the starter its only showing 8 volts. Yhis is why I then took a wire from the battery cable on the starter into a relay, the relay then runs onto the trigger switch for the starter and the push button now triggers the relay.

however, the starter only spins on button push, doesnt seem to move out and enged the flywheel unless you place a current directly from battery to trigger '55 Java Black Vogue

Wire gauge was syphoning off some voltage and not getting 12v to starter.

Im gonna get some pics up Joe and do a guide if folk want one. My big red push button would match yours perfectly '55 Java Black Vogue
