I run a Western Digital My Book Live 3TB plugged straight into router then just map the drive. Streams seamlesly to my Samsung 8000 smart tv. All computers on the network can store and share stuff.

The synologys will email about anything and everything as a good NAS should do

Capacity is not relevant as he was asking about a NAS .. which is essentially a box with drive bays, raid capability and network connectivity .... (and a clever little OS). You can put what you like in it! Land Rover Addict

I've yet to come across a SOHO Synology with HDD supplied.
