Recoding Keys

I need the keys/locks recoding if possible, changing if necessary. According to LR, it is not possible to recode a pre-2006 car (mine is 2003) and the full locking kit (door barrel, ignition barrel and glovebox barrel) will need to be replaced along with two new keys and valet key.

Fair enough if this is the case. I was wondering if any of the experts here knew different?

Thanks.

Dealer can disable previous key transponders, then supply you with new keys. If you have lost a key they would be able to open the door with the key, but not start the engine. I also think the alarm would go off, the key wouldnt be able to dissarm the alarm.

There is more info on this in the workshop manual and exactly what they can and cant do with the keys.

Thanks for that. Not what they said, funnily enough! I'd be quite happy to have the key in question disabled rather than have to do the whole lot. My specialist is investigating further as we speak!

There's a recent post about programming keys yourself, I can't search for you as I'm on the train doing this via an iPod but a quick search should prove fruitful Discovery 4 HSE

Not true about early models. I have a 2002 vogue and I've been told I CAN recode the key by two different dealers and an indy.

BTW- a replacement lock set is around £1,000! 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

Thanks folks. The car is off to my specialist next week to have the keys recoded. Ten minute job apparently and significantly cheaper than LR.

Sorry, did I say 5 minutes, it's actually 40 seconds:

Initialisation Procedure

1 Ensure the vehicle is unlocked and the driver and front passenger doors are closed.
2 Install a key/remote handset in the ignition switch, then turn the ignition switch to position I and back to position 0 in less than 5 seconds to put the BCU into the initialisation mode. Continue the procedure within 30 seconds of turning the ignition switch to position 0.
3 Remove the key/remote handset from the ignition switch.
4 Press and hold the unlock button for a maximum of 15 seconds. During this time, momentarily press the lock button three times within 10 seconds.
5 Release both buttons.
6 Successful initialisation is indicated by the BCU locking then unlocking the vehicle. If this does not occur, repeat step 4.
7 Repeat steps 4 and 5 with all other remote handsets belonging to the vehicle (4 maximum). Begin the initialisation of each remote handset within 30 seconds of completing the previous initialisation, or the BCU will drop out of the initialisation mode and the complete procedure will have to be started again.

I do understand people who don't work on their cars. There are some jobs that I can't be arsed to do myself because my time is more valuble to me. But on the other hand I like the fealing of saving money, and also knowing that I can do something mself... Anyway, the above is there for if you need it.

That only re-programmes the central locking though, doesn't it?

I think the original post was to programme a replacement key to the ignition, which is what I also need to do when I get a new key (unless I read it wrong?). 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

It was. However, I've now had the locking reprogrammed so that the car will only start with the two main keys. The missing valet key will still open the door but the alarm will sound and the car will not start. Good enough for me.
