coolant leak

hello

has any one had this prolem

my 2002 4.4 v8 uses a lot of coolant without any visable sign of leaking

hawever when the expansion tank is full and i have been queing steam comes out of the bonnet it is localised to the left hand side

it wont do it when the coolant has dropped in the expansion tank to just above minimum

i cannot see any damage to the expansion tank (have not removed yet)

im thinking one of three failings

1, the cap (is this Possible) Very Happy

2, the tank Smile

3, the radiator (doubtfull given the steam) Crying or Very sad

thanks to all Thumbs Up 02 Range Rover HSE Zambezie silver 4.4

Seen this on RR.net .......

Coolant Level Warning

Apparent coolant leaks (early models through 2006) may be due to a faulty coolant level float absorbing coolant and sinking. ====================================

"Open Mike Night " sounded like a lot of fun until i found out i was going to an Autopsy

Australia 2003 Range Rover HSE 4.4 V8 Tonga Green

Andy, I just went through the same thing from what I detect. Coolant level warning came on and then, thinking I would be okay for a day or two Mad , kept driving. Then all of a sudden, heard a gurgling sound so pulled over straight away. Turns out my thermostat was blocked which resulted in the pressure building up and cracking the reservoir. The local mechanic expalined that after 7 years of hard plastic cooling/heating/cooling this will happen. $500 later a new themrostat and reservoir. Now: 2003 Epsom Green HSE

just a quick update all

changed the expansion tank cap (12 quid) topped up and went to find traffic

the result wich i could not get it to do the steam thing as mentioned before, Smile

got back thinking all was well and parked up at work, came to the end of the day and a small (fist size) patch of coolant front centre Big Cry extended the EAS and crawled under for look and you may have got it by now but the radiator looks like it has sprung a leak and drips coolant so its off for a new radiator Big Cry it should be covered by the warrenty Confused

will let you know as it happens 02 Range Rover HSE Zambezie silver 4.4

Hi all thought i would up date you all, my indie confirmed that the radiator was mullered and would need replacing. i rang the warrenty company and tey confirmed the radiator was covered Very Happy so booked car in and got the indie to do the work (today its in) just got a phone call

1 the warrenty company will only pay for a non OEM radiator (i get the difference Big Cry )

2 they will only pay for the fitting time of the radiator ( i get the difference)

3. and finaly unbeliveable as it is because the coolant has nothing wrong with it they wont pay for that even tho the removal of the radiator will spill most of it into a bucket Big Cry

the good news is that they are paying the majority of the bill and i will be getting a chunk,

i did half expect this and as with any warrenty company they will always try and go the cheapest (get out of paying route) Censored

in my case the car came with the years warrenty and it cost me nothing i have a thousand pounds to spend and i will be making sure i get every last penny out of them
if i can (bring it On)

i must admit though they do make sence as the coolant was not broken it had just formed an escape commitee.

hopefully pick her up tonight with a gleaming new radiator

problem soughted

Thumbs Up

regards

Unless this is spelled out in their terms of agreement, the non oem rad is BS. Find a solicitor. I've seen oils, coolant, etc excluded before, though I think warranty co's are not doing themselves a favor with terms such as these: I can't imagine that, after having to drop several hundred on a radiator, 1000+ on a steering rack, or several thousand on a transmission, their balance is going to look much better due to saving a couple of quid on fluids. And their reputations will have suffered quite a bit - they need to put that on the books as well.

I realize that it is prob too late, but in this case you would have probably been ok with the aftermarket radiator. All aftermarket radiators I've seen or heard about, come from the aftermarket sales branch of Behr - who is also the oem supplier to LR (ask me how I know). As such, the aftermarket rads are identical to the oem's minus the LR part#. Rolling Eyes

hello all got her back and had a good old chat with the indie mech

it was £45 pound more for an oem and a years warrenty on it so i went for that option so it was not that bad and 15 quid for the OEM coolant

steve thanks for the advice and i will look at the policy and see were i go from there

the company by the way is VGS (i have never heard of them ethier) but was free and does pay in the most part despite my shouting
if however i had paid for it i would not be happy at the moment it well and truely softens any bill needed to be paid
as close to something for nothing as you can get me thinks Thumbs Up
as matter of interest the radiator was kept and it was absolutly warn out

the steam trail out around the header tank was i small hole on that side tat acted like a kettle

cheers all for the support
