Timed climate (heating) flattens my battery dead

Hello folks. I have an '09 RR Vogue: Pre-heating (no remote, just timer):

The last 2 times I've set my heating to pre-warm the car in the morning, I arrive to find the car is still freezing cold but the battery is completely dead (requiring a jump start).

My assumption would normally be a battery on its way out... but it never fails to start the car under other circumstances, when I often leave the car for days at a time and use it for short journeys with lights, wipers, seat heaters on etc.

I wondered if there is any other likely obvious problem which is causing the timed pre-heating to kill my battery whilst failing to warm the car at all?

It is pretty hard on the battery. Unless it is fully charged up it will go flat after a few days, especially if you don't do a fair mileage to top it back up again day to day. My car will always start after not being used for over a week, but my wife only does about 10 miles a day. The FBH flattens the battery after 2 days use of around 15 mins. Previously..

Wow, so it really may just be using it when the car hasn't been driven for a while? I've had the car for two winters now, and it didn't do it last winter, but then it's entirely possible there just wasn't the right combination of lack of use / cold temp / me setting the climate timer.

Maybe I'll get the battery checked anyway before I shell out for a new one or for any other diagnostics. If anyone else has had this experience though I'd be interested to know.

If there's a sure way to find out if your battery's less than optimal, this is the way to do it unfortunately.

A lot of people go to the bother (and expense) of getting their battery checked, only to be told it "looks fine", and then start experiencing "unusual" problems. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
