Some of you may be aware of the new 1st year Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) that will be chargeable on all new vehicles from 1st April. I thought that it would be helpful to provide some examples of what Land Rover expect the charges to be, and how they differ from the existing Road Fund Licence levels.

Please note that this replaces the normal road tax for the first year only and is not on top of road tax. To be fair it's not quite as painful as I expected it to be when it was announced in the budget.

I don't like the way we currently charge for road tax I don't think its fair at all. I believe, the people who use the most fuel should pay the most tax (perhaps with a special levvy on trade buyers). So rather than pay a fixed amount per year, wipe it out completely and just add it to fuel prices so those that use the roads/fuel the most pay the most tax. This would also mean that all those tax dodgers couldnt avoid the tax (which apparently they use as an excuse for the high taxes - compensating for those that dont pay, and the £millions spent on systems to chase them down).

thats my two penneth. there must be a legit reason why its never been done this way though Im sure (as its far too obvious a solution - there must be a catch?!)

Only issue I could see is the objection from those that Don't pay car tax - The Queen / my Mrs etc
