Quick one guys, I thought I'd do something useful today while servicing my 03 TD6 and decided to change the diff and transfer case oils while I was getting dirty. I thought I'd do the right thing and get these fluids from my local Stealer, but now I'm not sure if they have given me the right stuff for the transfer case.

I checked the Wiki for the recommended lubricants, and armed with this info, I went off to do some shopping. The diff oils are fine, I got TYK500010 for the front, and TYK500070 for the back - all happy.

I asked for STC4861 and they came back with a bottle that I assumed at the time was correct - I didn't bother checking the part number until I had drained the TC, only to find they have supplied me with IYK500010. When I looked this up it says it is for the RRS & Disco 3 which have a different TC than my NV225.

Can anyone confirm that this is correct for my TC, or that the Stealer has up here? I now have an empty TC and don't want to put the wrong stuff in it. The new oil they have supplied is much thinner than what came out, so I am a bit suspicious about what they have supplied me.

Any info would be great.

EDIT - Just found a thread on another forum where someone says that their local Stealer uses the same 75W90 oil in both diffs and the transfer case - would another litre of the diff oil be suitable for that if they don't have the STC4861?

Also, is the power steering fluid anything special or can I bung any PS fluid in there?

I would complain - unless they are prepared to guarantee your transfer box. The formulation for the oil was made specifically for the transfer box for the FFRR.

Regarding power steering fluid, we are supposed to use the green one (sorry can't remember the spec, it's on here or in handbook), but someone on here said it is OK to use the same ATF as we stick in the gearbox. .

Oh, I will be complaining... I should have realised they had no idea when he asked if it was the TD6 or the TDV6... When I told him the Range Rover never came with a TDV6 he seemed a bit miffed. Even though he clarified the vehicle I had - and I pointed to it through the window, the dumb must have thought I had a Sport...

Also how come they gave you two different oils for the diffs when i changed mine both were the same

And also after you replace the t/b oil make dure you opperate the hi and lo ratio and then recheck the level after a short run as ive found it goes down a tad and will need topping up onto no6 Range Rover

Um, the transfer box only takes a litre. I got a litre out and put a litre in. The oil comes in 1 litre bottles.

All good, they were happy to fix the mistake. They swapped the wrong bottle with TWO of the correct ones. I said it only takes a litre, but they said they were happy to provide me with 2 for my troubles.

Nice and happy now.
