Hi, I too have this problem, albeit very intermittently. Does anyone know if the BMW part (part no. 24107512755) will fit as its half the price of the Land Rover part (UHB500020)?

Thanks

According to the ZF parts manual the Inhibit switch is unique on the LR and is not interchangeable with others.
Checking confirms the cabling is longer for the LR version.

Parts manual available here:

I see they have gone up even more in price since I changed mine 5 years ago. Try an OEM part, some I've seen are actually warrantied longer than genuine LR (2 year v 1 year) and are cheaper.

Thanks for the that. Great advice, glad I checked. I'll get one ordered tomorrow and get rid of that extra annoying message that seems to know when I'm in a rush Thumbs Up

You can see in the photo below the difference in the wire length (though both the switch and the connector are identical in each case) :

Range Rover at the top (longer wire), BMW underneath (shorter wire) :

The wires are a different length because on the BMW transmissions the connector sits underneath the bellhousing whereas on the Range Rover it’s mounted above it (presumably to improve the wading capability and generally keep it out of harm’s way when off-roading).

Damn if I had known that was the only difference I would have done as Haylands said, chopped and soldered the old connector lead on a new BMW switch.
Mind you when I did mine they were over £50 cheaper than they are quoting now.
Live and learn, thanks as always Phil!

Got an OEM part on order from LRDirect, 2 year warranty for just less than £350. Although the BMW part is £125 cheaper don't fancy voiding any warranty with my soldering skills. Laughing Thanks for all the advice gents.

United Kingdom 2010 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Stornoway Grey

I got a second hand one off of ebay in the USA for just under £50 delivered to Scotland and it has been fine for the last 12 months.

I do like the idea of the BMW one and a bit of solder, that is how I did the inhibitor switch on my 90 2010 3.6TDV8 Stornoway Grey/ Black interior - gone
2005 4.4V8 (M62) Bonatti Grey/ Parchment interior - gone
1998 4.6HSE Blue/ Cream interior (can't remember exact colours) - gone
1977 White - gone (should have kept)

Hmmm, I have a RR Vogue 4.4 v8 petrol from 2003 and when the temperature is around zero degrees (Celsius) and the weather is wet or moist I seem to have "a" problem with my RR.....
When I turn the key everything works (electrical), the steering column moves, the nav and radio turn on but the engine stays dead.......
When I move the transmission lever from P tot D and back into P it starts. However I have no failmessages in my display (or when the car is being read through te computer).

Could this be bad contact of the contactpoints in the inhibitor (moist on the connection points?)

Next time the engine fails to crank you should check if ‘P’ is illuminated on the instrument panel.

Inhibitor

Hi RRPhil,

If the P does not light does it than mean the inhibitor is failing?
And what if it does light?

The inhibitor switch indirectly provides the signal to the instrument display so if the ‘P’ was not illuminated when the engine failed to crank this would indicate an inhibitor switch fault (or selector cable adjustment issue).

Is it easy to clean?

Hi. I currently have an intimitant problem with our inhibitor switch . Only very occassionaly the p does not appear on the dash so obviously won't let you start the car. Would it be worth while and easy enough to take it off, open it and clean it?

The inhibitor switch also allows the engine to be started in Neutral, as well as Park, of course. The two halves of the switch are held together by rivets so you would need to drill the heads off these to disassemble it and then re-rivet it (or similar) back together again once cleaned. As the switch is exposed to the elements under the vehicle it’s important that its seals are doing their job properly (there’s two for the shaft and one for the casing) so you’d need to be careful with these. Clearly, individual parts aren’t available for the switch so if anything is broken (like one of the wiper fingers, for example) the chances are that you’ll have to replace the whole switch. Having said all that, it’s easy enough to remove and replace and new ones are ridiculously priced so I would say, yes, give it a go.

I did clean up my inhibitor switch some time ago and fault has stayed away since. Grease inside had turned to wax and contacting wipers were not strong enough to push through it to make proper contact. Smile -08 3.6 Vogue

Sorry to resurrect an old post, but I have had a similar problem to this, with trans failsafe warning, with P being displayed. It happened in Germany recently, a mechanic came out, tapped the starter motor with a hammer and the engine turned over, so thats what i'm doing until i can get the car booked in. In my case I think it is the starter at fault because when I tap it and someone else turns the key, I get a spark/flash. All connections seem tight. Strange!
