Will a Facelift Grille fit on a Pre Facelift car? I've got an 05 but want to put an 06 grille on.

If lights are same as facelift then yes otherwise no.

So it's just the conversion grills that I believe sit bit further forwards.

Correct - they overlap part of the headlight to try to give the same effect, but then block the wiper arm.

Never looks quite right IMHO, but cheaper than doing a proper face lift I suppose.

The 2002-2005 bumper is flat along the top. From 05 onwards, the lights are slimmer and the bumper turns up at the ends slightly like this - so everything is a slightly different fit.
