I'm not sure where you got that information from! It's totally wrong - the Discovery was meant to be what it was, a lifestyle vehicle to compete with the Japanese market. It was *never* touted as a Defender replacement Land Rover Addict

see if I was LR that's what I'd have done; continue with L322 for as long as poss, prices down to around £50k, and then a new kinda "Super Range Rover" starting at £100k to compete with RR/Bentley etc. L405 IMHO is a bit compromised, and moving further from the shootin/fishin/affluent farmer RR owner heartland, who often seem to be swapping to Audi Allroads, strangely! |

Well I'm sure they read these forums and only time will tell. Customers vote with their feet. Do you remember when VW acquired Bentley and scrapped the ancient 6.75 litre V8 with all that torque in favour of the BMW engine? In no time at all the old engine was back and re-labelled as the Red Label...the outgoing L322 is a thing of beauty that had been perfected over the past decade. Maybe its an emissions thing as the new version is so much lighter, but there's room for both models surely. |

I hope your right but I think this is market specific: I predict a bit of a UK flop, as we're a traditional bunch and the previous RRs had such a rich semiotic value, appealing to our aspirations of a more ordered rural age, whereas the new one is more of a flash city-boy wagon... also every RR owner I have spoken to has said that they aren't that impressed and wont be changing any time soon... £72k+ is too much money for a compromise buy.

It isn't just Land Rover (although they are very guilty of it) - there's been a trend to flash across the industry. The Zeitgeist has changed, taste isn't what it was - money is in different places, luxury brands have to follow it. I know they would sell about three of them, but it would be nice to see the option of a trim level that looked a bit less like a magpie's nest with fewer twinkly bits. Maybe they could call it "County" or something. |

Much of that column could have been lifted from internet forums. |
