Trying to get 4 new tyres from the Dealer

I am in talks with the Dealer I bought the car from that my tyres are NOT the correct ones for the full size Range Rover on standard 20" alloys, being the 275/45/20 110V and not the 255/50/20 109Y that they should be.

It looks like it's all going to boil down to whether the service department deem these Range Rover Sport size tyres to be illegal on this car and alloys.

I'm sure there's plenty of conjecture to be had but surely if Land Rover only recommend ONE size of 20" tyres for the FFRR and these ones the car was supplied with are the wrong dimension, wrong load rating and wrong speed rating, then this should be seen as illegal as they could affect the handling, safety and certainly invalidate my insurance as they are considered a modification beyond the manufacturers specifications.

Anyone got any views? Discovery 4 HSE

Stick to your guns.

This vehicle has been changed from the original LR spec so your insurance won’t be happy.

At the end of the day its a premium luxury vehicle with very downmarket, incorrectly sized tyres, Stratstone were well aware of this fact when I viewed that vehicle - they should have changed them at that time.

I'm well aware that Stratstone have a "no haggle" price structure but they should be selling a fully tested, fault free, scratch free, well presented vehicle to LR's standards with the correct sized, matching tyres on each axle etc

If you get no joy ask them to swap the vehicle (which they wont want to do hence giving you leverage) OR contact LR and explain to them the problems about the tyres.

If you cant buy a "straight" car from an LR dealer, where can you get one from?

Tops and bottoms, Stratstone should never have sold that vehicle with those tyres fitted. '09 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto for the Mrs

Its not as bad as my car was...

Mine was supplied by Marshalls LR in Melton and it had RR Stormer wheels on (non genuine) with nexens on.

Tyre size on those was 295/40/20 - wrong even for the alloy, let alone the FFRR.

I put up with it and bought new genuine 20s from Rimmer Bros.

Poor from a main dealer really though.... FFRR TD6 06MY. Cairns Blue, Blue Hide. LR 7 Spoke 20" Wheels, S/C Grill and Vents. Privacy Glass and Side Steps

Were did those tyres came from??
They are not even RRS specs, they use 106Y.

You should press press press press them to put you with correct tyres.
And be prepared to be annoyed a lot, as both tyres with the correct dimensions are ultra super duper expensive, and as such, they will not want to trade them...

Update on this:

Spoke to the Sales Manager, obviously they are extremely keen not to replace all four tyres. His suggestion was to get the car in and have the Service department check the tyres (It would seem my word of what is on each alloy is not good enough) and then report back to him as to whether the tyres are ilegal or not. If they ARE, he said they'd replace all four on the spot as they keep them in stock.

(I can see how the Service Dept will be swayed by the Sales Manager just a little Censored )

Anyway, its booked in for Jan 5th, which is fine as I have an all day meeting only 5 miles away.

I rang another Dealer and asked for their opinion on these tyres, essentially they said that they would not recommend this size and that there is only one size and specification of Tyre for the FFRR.

I also rang Land Rover customer services and asked the same questions. Same answers really, only one size supplied for the FFRR, although apparently there is a list of 3 recommended other sizes if for some reason a tyre fitter cannot get the correct ones...seems a bit weird really. One thing they did say was that the Speed rating was not that important, as long as it was V rated or more. (And, actually, the load rating of these RRS size tyres is greater than for the FFRR, SSSHH, don't tell them that though! Whistle )

Anyway, I will stick to my guns, cite insurance, safety, handling, ride, fuel economy and the fact that LR only supply the FFRR in ONE SIZE of tyre.

If they won't budge, I may just replace them anyway as I'm driving down to the Alps mid January with 4 of us in the car and want to be as safe as possible. I can always flog these on eBay to a RRS owner as they have a good amount of tread on, £50 a tyre would do, pays a bit back on the new ones. Discovery 4 HSE

Kenya

They're definitley not illegal, because the load rating (110) exceeds the minimum for the RR.

However, if you can get new tyres out of the dealer, then go for it.

Excellent info on tyres that fit the FFRR: http://www.rangerovers.net/outfitting/tires/mkiiitires.html

Hope that helps. Thumbs Up

If there not playing ball on replacing them how about asking for a signed letter for your insurance company from the dealer principle stating that there is no safety concerns with this size of tyre on the FFRR, they are approved for use on this vehicle and there is no insurance liability to you the customer. They would at least have to consult their legal department before issuing such a letter and at that point it might be cheaper to give you a new set of tyres ?

Good luck Thumbs Up
