Having got my pixel issue nearly sorted yesterday, I noticed the message "Pre Heat" appear on the display this morning when I started the car.

I understand this to be the Fuel Burning Heater kicking in to help the water heat up etc, but when I looked in my manual I saw ;

I think it comes on under a certain temperature? 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

Yeah, I think I follow when it comes on, and what its supposed to do, its just the bit where the manual says "deactivate if not required".

I assume this means "at the dealer", and the FBH will not operate from then on, or is there some sort of button press somewhere that turns it off just for that journey ? Like a one shot override........

Think it just means at the dealer..........or with IID Tool etc..........as oppose to "if you press the heated steering wheel button within 5 seconds of the Pre Heating being displayed, the FBH will stop..........for example.

I thought this was to heat your spark plugs in very cold weather? So it's to heat the car?

I think you'll find the "pre heat" is warming up your glow plugs to ensure easy starting.

Wait till the displayed words disappear then start up.

Well thats a different take on it.

There is nothing about it in the Starting section of the manual.

If I were a betting man, I'd say its for the FBH...........maybe I'm totally wrong.

If its for the glow plugs (mines a Td6) why would you want the option to deactivate it ?

As Paul says "Pre-heat" refers to the fact the glowplugs are heating, nothing to do with FBH.

I thought so because it goes out after few seconds. If it was preheating car it would stay on.

Not sure why you can deactivate it though- why would you do that?

Just looked on a few BMW forums, and the general consensus is its the glow plugs pre heating. Some say it starts when you open the door, some say when you put the key in the ignition. Thats on later BM's though.

I now assume to "deactivate" it, you attempt to start the engine.............

I thought the curly orange coily glow plug light was enough, I always wait for that to go out anyway.

My FBH was running at the time, but that was probably a coincidence.
