Need advise for V5 Log book check

Hi Guys,

I have seen a car i am interested in however I need some advise regarding the V5 log book for the car.

The situation is as follows:

Current seller purchased the car from a main dealer 4 months ago (I am assuming I can confirm this sale with them as I have the name of the current owner)
The current owner diddnt send off the log book to have the name changed as hes been so busy.

How does this work? From the way things work on a private sale, new owner gets small slip of new keeper and seller of car sends off V5 to show thr new owner and sale of car.

Would the main dealer send this off? Is there anyway for me to confirm with the DVLA what the latest V5 is for the car and who has it ?

Just needing some advise tbh
I do like the car

I would have thought the dealer would have done this and the new (and current) owner would have received the V5 in his name within a few days.

Who's name's on the V5 just now then? Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Hi Alanm_3

thats exactly what I thought -

Is funny you ask that because thats exactly the question I have proposed to the seller. I asked for the current name showing on the log book/part of the log book he has but also the log book serial number so I could check it with the DVLA.

Unless the dealer hasn't done his bit for some reason, but even if he hadn't, as the new owner, I would have chased it up well before 4 months had elapsed!

Which main delear was it? Like you say, a quick call to them will confirm if it's legit......... Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Hey,

It's a BMW man dealer and the seller was very forthcoming with the information and told me the situation himself when I asked how many previous owners there were stating that essentially he would be missed if I was to buy the car.

Setting the above statement aside the onyl reason I have not walked away is because it was purchased from a BMW main dealer in Knights staffordshire and said I was more than welcome to confirm the sale with him and told me a genuine reason for sale.

Ill drop them a call on monday

Are they not open today?

Did the seller explain why he didn't chase it up himself?

Of course, it could have a perfectly innocent explanation, but I for one wouldn't have left it so long to chase up the V5............ Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Hi,

Tried to call today but its mainly the service department that would be able to help and they are not open.

The seller just stated they were too busy to bother chasing it - in all honesty I have been similar myself but I waited 3 months

not as bad as 4 Smile

Thanks for your help so far - ill keep the thread updated.

And were they too busy to chase it up once they had decided to sell the car?

Surely anyone serious about selling wouldn't leave such a potentially contentious issue unresolved?

Mind you, there's nowt stranger than folk! Whistle Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

well Alanm_3

heres a strange turn of events. I asked the person to send me the serial number of the log book they had so I could do checks on it and low and behold the person has managed to send me the log book under his name?

I checked the serial number according on the DVLA sight and it ties up all ok. I think the person isnt too clued up on how things work with log books, I think when he got his new keeper slip he diddnt send this off so thought maybe it wasnt logged or something but what I do know is he is the registered keeper of the car, BMW was the first as he said it was before him, the date of the log book issue of the website ties in approx within 1 month of when he purchased the car according to him.

I guess the only thing I can do now is call bmw and see if they can verify the sale and when ensuring it all all.

I am assuming there are no other checks I can do?

I I purchase from the address as per the log book and maybe even see if driving license as per the name on the log book, confirm purchase with bmw then it should be all good.

The main thing is price, regardless of your checks etc if the price is to cheap then it would be deemed by courts and police that you should of known something was amiss, that is if the worse case senerio was to pan out Looking right now for the FFRR ultimate upgrade

Walk away.

If he's lied to you already over documentation, what else is amiss ? Regarding the log book issue, there may be an ongoing dispute over ownership / payment / finance - who's to know ?

There are lots of cars for sale where the owner will be more than happy to show you everything is ok.

He's had his chance - time to move on ?

Thumbs Up Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

Have you done a HPI check?

Are you sure there is no outstanding finance on the car?

This sounds fishy, tread carefully! Shocked

Seems ok to me if I am honest.

He has the log book - provided me the serial number which I checked on DVLA Site
Has his name and address on it which if I really wanted to I could confirm with his driving license
I will complete a HPI check as usual if I can come to an agreement with him
I will call BMW that sold the car to confirm if they did infact sell it few months ago and I am sure if I provide the name and address they can confirm the sale
Also its on ebay which I do take comfort from as you need a proper account - has it on a 30 days classified listing not a short 3 day auction for a quick sale
Gave me what I thought was a genuine reason for sale
Also if I really want to go the full hog I can get it full inspected by BMW/AA for a couple of hundred pounds to give me peace of mind

Just seems a bit "odd" that he seemed to "forget" that the V5 was in his name after telling you it wasn't............ Whistle Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
