Satnav dead reckoning

The GPS antenna on my FFRR has gone open circuit. Hopefully it will be an easy fix.

Nonetheless, I have been very impressed with the system's ability to know where it is by dead reckoning alone. Only extreme maneuvers cause it to lose its way, which requires me to manually tell it where it is. I have covered over 100 miles since my last reset, and it remains accurate to within a few metres.

Question How can it possibly know how fast, far, direction you are going if it has no input? I have been through long tunnels before and it loses it's signal, it then seems to guesstimate where you are... But 100 miles? Have I misread your post? Previously..

IIRC the 'Dead Reconing' feature used electronic components such as gyroscope, accelerometer, compass etc .... to estimate its position when GPS positioning is lost.

I did not know that. Quite a good system then, impressive. It's a pity the maps look so poor on my FFRR satnav. I will need to see if I can update the maps to a newer version. Previously..
