Different intercooler suppliers

I am after an intercooler for my TD6.
I see Britpart, PR2 Hella and Land Rover.
The first 2 are reasonably priced and the latter horrendous.
Also a few manufacturers for BMW intercoolers but they are a bit pricey.
The original one is a Behr brand and it split.
Apart from initial price I have to add postage and possible customs fees due to price exceeding NZ$400.
Therefore I would like it to be under NZ$400

So my market is limited to Britpart and PR2 Hella, what is the difference between these 2 intercoolers?. Or are they the same with a different logo. I recently fitted a Britpart transferbox motor and it looks identical to OEM.

I don't know the difference between them but I would steer clear of any Britpart spares

My Britpart intercooler arrived this week.
Took it out of the box and it has the same manufacturer markings as the original one, BEHR. So it looks to me like it is a genuine part. At about a third of the price of a Land Rover one.
Same sort of deal with the Britpart transfer box motor I bought.
I am not going to get into a Britpart argument but so far the 2 big items I have bought for my L322 appear to have been made in the same factory as Land Rover parts but sell for a third the price.
I never had any problem with the stuff I bought for my old 300TDi Disco.

Talking to a friend who used to make bearings for various companies including major motor companies. He said that the tooling would be calibrated for the main motor companies orders, then once they were done, secondary runs would be done for the aftermarket stuff. Result being slightly worse tolerances, but essentially the same product. V8 or else ...

I'm sure this can be true, but I also know that most OEM suppliers do not get more from the OEM than from an aftermarket reseller for their products. And they'd generally gladly sell to the aftermarket but are bound by contracts guaranteeing exclusivity to the OEM. When they can get out of the exclusivity clause, they sell to the aftermarket.

There are numerous factors driving a general loosening of the exclusivity clauses: OEMs not wanting to have cheap Chinese knock-offs marring their reputation is one major recent development.

An intercooler can be better or worse, but building one is not rocket science. And the OEM mark-up on parts like this is way too much in most cases as far as I am concerned. For my personal purchases, I'd def go with an aftermarket supplier on a part like this. But then, I am a cheapskate Laughing

Got to find out lots on Britpart by becoming a supplier to them.

Did you know that LR's single biggest spare parts customer is Britpart? And they are not buying these OEM parts for their personal use... Razz

They are doing much for their quality. I'm sure not all is perfect, but it is improving. And if you still don't trust the Britpart brand, you can ask for other branded parts sold through Britpart. The GBP185 L322 front struts (Island 4x4) by Dunlop are a prime example. Or you can purchase Delphi struts (OEM supplier) for only marginally more. Or radiators by Behr (OEM supplier). The list is long. And these are all supplied to retailers by Britpart at a fraction of the LR price.

Not to forget our products which are Britpart branded... Whistle

Intercooler fitted

Fitted the intercooler today.
I followed the instructions in Rave upto the point of removing and installing the i/c.
Rave says to just take it out and looking at the diagram it pulls out the front.
Well in my experience it doesnt just pull out.
What I did was remove the washer bottle from the front left guard and a bit of plastic that was bolted to the chassis rail. Then I fed the intercooler in through the gap I created.
Everything else fitted back as per Rave but I spent 1.5hrs trying to get the fan back on its thread, yes I know its left hand but big hands and small space make it tricky.
I set the car to max offroad height and did all the work at that. I am 6ft5 which helps Very Happy

Out of interest the Cosworth i/c I fitted as a temporary measure had a 2 litre capacity while the Land Rover i/c takes just under 3.5 litres. Thats got to help
