Noisy gearbox

Not sure how to describe this but my gearbox is noisy somedays then other days its not . The noise isn't mechanical , it sounds almost like a whir , as if a big fan is on , any ideas ?

Are you sure it's the gearbox? The viscous fan can be very noisy when it's operating (big fan noise)

I am wondering if it is my fan as mentioned , am I right in thinking the fan shouldn't kick in untill the engine is warm ? If so if I see the fan turning from a cold engine it's faulty ?
