Battery charging through tow bar sockets - which pins?

I already hi-jacked one thread a little so I though I would just start this as a separate topic.

My RR is fitted with the standard (for a 2007 anyway) tow bar setup and therefore has two sockets on the car. I was thinking if I wanted to trickle charge the car overnight in this cold weather I could do it using one or other of these sockets and therefore keep the car locked up and no need to get cables, mains or otherwise, into the car.

So my question is in the title; there are two sockets one with a black cover and one with a white one, I understand that some of the pins are suitable to connect a charger in this way but I don't know which.

Any experiences to share or other help or advice would be gratefully received - the C-tek changer is already on order.

Thanks Thumbs Up Geoff

12 S socket, the white one.
Pin 4 +ve
Pin 3 -ve
Not sure a Ctek will work this way, cableson the car are too long.

I believe the bottom pin on the white socket is the live one and the centre one is the earth.

Need to confirm with a diagram or tester Thumbs Up

Beat me to it.

I have the cigar adapter for my Ctek and use the boot socket.

Surely if you connect the CTEK through the towbar socket it would then have to go through the towbar electronics box

Here you go:

Can't see any reason why it won't work. Electricity travels both ways perfectly well, and it comes out OK... Whistle Graham

Guys
You've given me lots to take into account so I've e-mailed tech support at Ctek for a definitive answer.
I don't want to break anything Sad

I would still be interested if anyone has tried this Thumbs Up Geoff

sorry to jump in here, but just a quick thought, as the reversing lights are so poor, we could tap into those cables with an auxillary led reverse light.

sorry now back on topic Embarassed

Hi Geoff

Plenty folks on the sister Disco3 forum do this on the D3.

I did try it with a Ctek.
In order that the charger could stay in the garage I connected about 3m of
2.5 mm cable to the chargers output cable as an extension and fitted a 12S plug on the end, +ve to pin 4, -ve to pin 3.
Initially the charger worked ok but after an hour it reverted to "error".
Did it twice. I contacted ctek who advised me this arrangement wouldn't work unless all cables were "large". Presumably for volt drop.
Instead of persuing this I resorted to plan B and and made up a mains voltage extension cable from 0.75mm circular lighting cable with a rubber socket on the end. I put the socket and the charger in the car, connect the charger to the front cigarette socket and pass the mains cable out thro the bottom of the door and close the door on the cable.
No problems to date.
I have a voltmeter on the car and doing the above I loose 0.2V thro the circuit from the charger output. I have a suspicion that connecting to the 12S would result in a larger voltage drop.
The pin 4 on the 12S socket is a direct feed to the car battery and doesn't go thro the trailer wiring ecu.
Be interested to know how you get on.

I'll give it a try anyway, it's only a couple of quid for a 12S plug - but I'll use fatter cables Very Happy

Unfortunately, the only permanent live socket I have is in the boot, so the distance to the battery is only a metre difference and the cig socket probably has thinner wire.

I'm cool with lifting the bonnet as I've done for years on various cars but this seems an elegant alternative if it works Thumbs Up

Thanks for all the help and advice guys Bow down Geoff

It's the cold dark nights that are causing me a problem so I reckon solar power wont cut it and I needed an excuse to buy a decent charger Very Happy
although I now also have an excuse to buy a solar charger Whistle

I am charging it up now using an old variable PSU but obviously it requires a bit of TLC and a lot of manual intervention to keep the Heath Robinson setup on task - monitoring current and voltage Geoff
