I already hi-jacked one thread a little so I though I would just start this as a separate topic.

I believe the bottom pin on the white socket is the live one and the centre one is the earth.

Surely if you connect the CTEK through the towbar socket it would then have to go through the towbar electronics box |

sorry to jump in here, but just a quick thought, as the reversing lights are so poor, we could tap into those cables with an auxillary led reverse light.

Quick look at D3 (thanks Graham) suggests that this should be fine - Happy Days Geoff |

I did try it with a Ctek. In order that the charger could stay in the garage I connected about 3m of 2.5 mm cable to the chargers output cable as an extension and fitted a 12S plug on the end, +ve to pin 4, -ve to pin 3. Initially the charger worked ok but after an hour it reverted to "error". Did it twice. I contacted ctek who advised me this arrangement wouldn't work unless all cables were "large". Presumably for volt drop. Instead of persuing this I resorted to plan B and and made up a mains voltage extension cable from 0.75mm circular lighting cable with a rubber socket on the end. I put the socket and the charger in the car, connect the charger to the front cigarette socket and pass the mains cable out thro the bottom of the door and close the door on the cable. No problems to date. I have a voltmeter on the car and doing the above I loose 0.2V thro the circuit from the charger output. I have a suspicion that connecting to the 12S would result in a larger voltage drop. The pin 4 on the 12S socket is a direct feed to the car battery and doesn't go thro the trailer wiring ecu. Be interested to know how you get on. |

I'll give it a try anyway, it's only a couple of quid for a 12S plug - but I'll use fatter cables

It's the cold dark nights that are causing me a problem so I reckon solar power wont cut it and I needed an excuse to buy a decent charger
