Purchasing help

Hi

Interested in buying one of these L322 models.
Budget would be circa £10-£12k.
Is this too little for a good honest reliable one? (Is there such a thing as a reliable one?)

WHat should I be looking out for?
What goes wrong and how expensive to fix?
Should I be budgetting for a good warranty?

Any help greatly appreciated as I have to admit I do fancy one but alittle scared at what could go wrong??!!??

Bets regards

Db

10-12k is plenty to buy one....your issue would be if you think you will be able to run one on normal 10-12k car money.

You may be lucky, I've heard that some are reliable, but most have lots of issues (electrical, gearbox, cooling, suspension, to name a few). If you do all the work yourself and have another runabout to use while its bust it may be affordable, but at dealer prices, reckon on £3k a year keeping an old one on the road and lots more if the gearbox or engine go pop! Mike - MPx

3k per year just to keep it going??
Plus fuel of course. At 6k miles I expect fuel to be at circa£2500

And would I be insane to look at the cheaper ones on eBay??

Don't be it off by the horror stories. £3k per year running costs is way over the odds. do your research and choose well. I got advice from a dealer friend of mine when choosing mine and had no probs. my bills have only been for brakes, service etc so less than £1000 over 3 years.

Fuel cost is c. 22-25p per mile for diesel depending on your driving style. Some get over 30mpg. I get an average of 25-27, combined town and motorway driving.

Most of my customers dont spend much more than £500 a year by the time a service and MOT have been taken into account...

Yes on the odd occasion things go wrong but get someone who knows what they are doing to look at it properly to make sure its not made to look right for sale...

As with most things, you buy a good one, you'll get a good one... But a pig will always be a pig!

Does anyone run these older models with a warranty, such as warranty direct. (£750 main dealer. £675 franchised). Or do LR. Do a warranty for them. Other costs would be good at this stage.

Refurb gearbox...?
Is air suspension. £300 a corner plus new pump at £???
Front and rear suspension ...?
What else is common??

Depending on how many miles you do per year, have you considered a newer S/C with the ZF gearbox ?? MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

The cheapest I found a rebuilt Td6 gearbox with the Sonnax valve block upgrade and Torque Converter was about £1495 + VAT.

Without fitting. thats just supply.

Image around 6 hours labour for remove and refit ?

Not convinced the ZF box is massively better than the one on the Td6.

Obviously the more recent ones ought to be OK......

My 12 month warranty runs out next month.

Ok so I,ve just spotted a Vogue SE TDv8..

Certainly over my current budget but are they worth stretching for??
Are they THAT much better.. I see fuel economy is actually half reasonable and comparible to what I have now.!

The TDV8 is a huge improvement on the TD6. I've got one and love it.

I previously had a 4.4 petrol - the TDV8 is both quicker and more economical - and when towing, pulls like a train.

At 6k miles a year, you may consider a petrol one - you can probably get a supercharged for quite a bit less that a TDV8 and spend the difference on fuel Very Happy

Branco, I have a TDV8 & now have put 30k on her not so much a blink of an eye, she was serviced my Rovertune a week ago & is still running perfectly no warnings, the owner said she is in top condition, which is always nice to know Cool

INMOP its the best 4x4 I have ever owned & I have had a lot, I love driving it, in fact I cant keep out of the RR & I think the TDV8 is worth stretching for drive one you will not want to give it back Thumbs Up Mutt
