Transmission Faults

I have been getting two warnings recently that come and go within seconds. Limited gears only and range change not available.

The gearbox (changed oil and filter about half a year ago) is still smooth as and without issues apart from a bit of changing up and down when driving very steady and relatively slowly and the pedal moving up and down slightly (bumpy road).

I have a feeling that it has to do with wiring/plugs or sensors. Does anyone have an idea ??

The fault codes showed something to do with algorithm not matched or the likes, I cleared the fault codes to see if anything comes up. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Do you have a main dealer in Lagos? I think it maybe time to have the gearbox ECU re-flashed with the updated/latest software... Having mine done this week as its not quite perfect...

Hi Craig, we do have a main dealer here in Lagos but after hearing the horror stories about Nigerian dealers/car shops in general (including first hand accounts) I don't want to take it to the dealer.

But you are right, it should help (and has been suggested to me before). My problem is, technically the Faultmate can do it but since I keep having issues with the Faultmate talking to the car, I don't want to risk having it stopped mid transfer type thing.

The issue is, sometimes it reads the faultcodes of a module and then the clearing doesn't work (first/second/third go) and sometimes it won't read but clear fine. And BBS have not been able to resolve it yet (they don't know what it is).

I am still hoping for a "bad" connection somewhere, hence my (hopefully soon) attempt to spray all connectors with contact cleaner. I have had issues with connectors before as this car has been sitting still for 2 years before I bought it and considering temperatures and humidity here that could be the problem.

Anyway, thanks for your response and if you hear anything, please let me know Smile

Good luck with your reflash ! MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Have a look at the post from rockportpurple( hdc inactive ) about only having limited gears as it stated cause was a bad connection from the battery to bulkhead causing the issue could be similar to your issue. Hope it helps

Thanks Roger, was just reading it and have checked that particular one (even took it off and cleaned it when I got the car). In fact, did that to all the ground connections under the bonnet (as almost 30 years of experience with cars has shown me that the majority of problems with olders cars are bad electrical connections).

What I haven't done yet is spray contact cleaner on all connectors and that is the next step. Used WD40 on some because I could not get cc, but brought back a can on a recent trip. So I am hoping that that will solve the problem, will also check all the connectors Wink MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Have a similar problem with BBS see my post re tranfer box problems. I am a bit further south so if nessecery can go to a stealer they just think their customers print their own Rand notes. Anyway good luck with your problem

Hi L, just spent a month in Joburg with the family on vacation. Didn't realize the dealers were that bad down there as well. From our point of view it is quite cheap there (most things). MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Update : Last night I opened up the box with the transmission ECUs. Disconnected the battery leads and liberally sprayed the plugs, fuses etc. with contact cleaner. Removed/disconnected all of them and put them back (did that a few times).

I noticed that on the two main fuses (40 and 50 Amps) the blades were covered in a light coating of rustorange. Removed it and put them back.

I also cleaned the battery poles and clamps just to be sure. Now my transmission fault doesn't happen daily, more like 2 to 3 times per week so no idea if it worked. I suggest that you do the same, also spray all the earthing points under the hood (I removed the major ones and cleaned them before putting them back).

Will keep you all posted on progress.

Note : the fault code that came up last was something like 3-4 gear shift, algorithm issue expected (not exact code). MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

I've just had the exact same fault after a software update, the tech cleared the code and reported it to Land rover, he says he'll come back to me when he has some more info, I'll let you know as I know more,

Thanks mate, really appreciate it !!!

On mine sofar no issues but still early in the week since cleaning the electrics. Fingers and toes crossed here Wink

Correction, gremlin is still there. Once the fault chimed the gearbox refuses to leave third gear so the acceleration becomes sluggish, more like a "normal" car Sad MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Then i should stay away from them as the gearbox software was corrupted or non genuine or had been done in a fashion as to screw up the gearbox ECU...

Transmission specialists had "NO COMS" with the gearbox ECU when using an Autodata machine some weeks/months ago when they checked the levels and chemistry of the oil...

Hence my alarm bells ringing and a trip to Main Agents

Latest update. Last night I reset the adaptive values of the gearbox and the gear changes (esp. 3-4) got worse at "Miss Daisy" driving style. If I sped up a bit, driving a bit more spirited the gear changes were fine. But since morning traffic does not allow for that the transmission failure came in pretty quick. So switched to Tiptronic mode and hey presto, everything is fine.

So my best guess now is an ECU issue. I have downloaded the flash file so now hoping I get a chance to flash it into the ECU soon !!!! MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
