Hello All!

Well i've owned my Range Rover 54 4.4V8 Range Rover for 2 years now, just clocked 73k in it! And all of a sudden I think everything that can go wrong has gone wrong! I am looking for a few solutions and checks I can make before taking it to the local specialist and having my eyes taken out! Contacts for spare parts would also be appreciated!

Air suspension showing inactive - you can hear the air suspension working when you get out the car, if that helps at all?
Air conditioning is no longer working?
Slow leak on my cooling system, I have to top up every 2 weeks?
Rear windscreen washer not working
Bonnet release cable has just snapped at the handle inside the car
Brake imbalance on my last MOT nearly at the limit?

Air suspension showing inactive - you can hear the air suspension working when you get out the car, if that helps at all?

Could be all sorts of things - you need to get this diagnosed - but either a faulty sensor, a hole in an airbag, the compressor has had it or the air tank isn't doing its job

Just air con ? Or are blowers not working? If the latter could be your FSR (First stage resistor). If no cooling then may need a regass or check for a leak on the condenser (in front of coolant radiator)

Check for leaks, but this doesn't sound too bad. How much are you having to put in every fortnight, i have to top up @ i/2 pint every week due to a "leak" somewhere. Difficult to spot given system runs at 105 degrees so it just evaporates when it escapes.

Bonnet release cable has just snapped at the handle inside the car

Oh dear. Can you get a pair of pliers on the cable (may have to take a few things apart to get at it) to get the bonnet open? If so straight forward replacement.

Brake imbalance on my last MOT nearly at the limit?

Discs, pads, or both, calipers seized possibly. Standard brake stuff anyone can resolve.


Most of this is DIYable with the right tools, depends how "handy" you are, otherwise it is dealers or Indie to get sorted. .

One thing every FFRR owner needs is something to read and reset fault codes with. I finally got around to buying one - the GAP Diagnostics IID tool, and I should have bought it sooner - very handy bit of kit. This will help you narrow down what your EAS fault is.

As for parts, there are plenty of suppliers around and a lot of parts for these are reasonably priced - I ship parts from Paddocks and British Parts UK here to Aus, as this is waaaaaay cheaper than buying locally - even for heavy things like brake rotors and air springs, so I can recommend both those, and freight in the UK from them is fairly cheap. If your handy with the spanners, they are also a fairly easy vehicle to work on, but the Stealers will try to tell you otherwise. The brakes, suspension, etc are all straight forward and should present no problems to the average home mechanic.

@csjxx Where in Tyne and Wear are you? I have a RAC that I can plug in and try to diagnose/clear faults/help you with.

As joe has said all easy fix's really. My cable has also snapped £14 from dan. Pull off the will kick plate, just pulls up then pull the black surround with the release handle towards the back of the car. You will then be able to get at the bonnet cable.

Coolant leaks are usually rad, hose's or expansion tank. You need to look for white staining to help identify which bit is leaking. [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

I have had most of these in past three weeks and having them all fixed at the moment

Air con - was just a regas the compressor was fine
Slow leak from the coolant system - It would drive me mad knowing I had a leak and not fixing it so having it done while having a major service, it turns out the leak is from a plate with a gasket that has worn on the very back of the engine, the plate serves no purpose at all but the gasket has perished over the years, the fix was to have the gearbox out, as this is the only way to access it and currently awaiting the plate and gasket on back order from land rover.

Word of warning, thanks to this forum I also asked him to check the crank case breather, mine had not been changed and was solid and full, the car was not breathing properly and neither was any seperation taking place, this has all been replaced and cleaned. This would fail the engine if left ! Pictures to follow

Air suspension - make sure you have the right software upgrade on your car and check the airbags.

I just don't understand why people keep driving knowing the car has problems it will end up damaging the car, Atleast I can guarantee anyone who owns my car in the future will have a mint example that since I have owned has been thoroughly loved and looked after.

Thanks, ive contacted dan for a price for a few parts, just waiting for a reply now. Going to get the brake pads and discs done. Once ive got the bonnet open will have a good look to see if i can spot this leak!

Well ive decided I will carry out a 75k service next time im home at the same time as some of the other repairs.

Before I order the parts.. what needs to be done at this service? anything extra I should do?
