Deployable side steps

I am thinking of getting Deployable Side Steps fitted to my Westminster next visit to the dealers, and am seeking opinions/advice on whether it's a good idea or not.

Are they a pain if you need to jack the FFRR up, handbook says to remove them first?

Are they sturdy and reliable?

Do the advantages exceed the disadvantages of having them?

Most importantly, an idea of total price I could expect to pay dealer for supplying and fitting.

I have them fitted to mine, they are sturdy and useable. You are required to remove them as per the manual prior to jacking, the step itself is removed using an Allen key in the underside. This leaves the mechanism and step supports on the vehicle but allows safe access to the jacking points.
There is another thread on here which suggests putting the steps into access mode then pulling the fuse which would stop the steps from moving back in whilst jacking.
In my opinion if you want the steps to aid access but don't find the fixed steps aesthetically pleasing, deployables are fr you. Unfortunately you have to pay handsomely for he privilege. There is a thread somewhere with the prices quoted from Dan @ Duckworth iirc.
If you like gadgets you'll love deployables as when you unlock the car out they pop to welcome you onboard...
Had it, loved it!

How much Thud

I have noticed access height on the RRS is a lot lower than the Full fat but being normal height I can cope with it. It was interesting last night getting my small elderly aunt in the Full fat - don't think she will moan about the RRs again though Rolling with laughter

She told me off last week for thinking of changing RRS but when she sat in the vogue ate her words and said she thought it was lovely Rolling Eyes Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

I have had 3 FFRRs.The first 2 had the "ugly steps".My new Westminster I had deployables fitted from new in March and its the BEST thing I have ever had fitted in my opinion. Thumbs Up If you have nothing nice to say,say nothing at all.

Very happy with my deployable side steps. They are out of the way most of the time and give good off road clearance. Wife, mother etc.. find them essential. I'm not that bothered but it is pretty cool when you open the car in a busy car park and they deploy like magic Very Happy

I was worried about reliability but they are extremely solid. Use them in automatic mode and don't worry about them or lock them down for cleaning the roof windows etc.. There are some instructions which you can download from TOPIX.

I'm a fan.... Thumbs Up 2012 5.0L S/C

How do they not affect offroad clearance? Surely they are just like normal steps - only not out to the sides when un-deployed....if anything surely they are deeper than a standard step that doesn't need mechanism? Land Rover Addict

I've never measured the off road height to the deployable step but my impression is that everything is well tucked away and almost flush with the sills. i.e. higher off the road than the fixed step. I might be wrong but that's what it looks like. Question 2012 5.0L S/C

Hello

A couple of questions mates, as I am tempted myself.

- Does anyone know if the silver part that can be seen while tucked under can be easily unbolted to be powder coated (I really do not like seeing this)?

- Just out of interest, does anyone know who produce them for LR? I do not plan to contact them, as they would not sell direct anyway, I just like to know who builds products I buy.

I think it depends which vehicle they're on as to whether they look good.

I opted for standard steps, cause I thought they looked nicer on my colour choice & were actually at a better height for stepping up in. The deployable steps go lower than the fixed ones, but then means you have a higher step to get into the vehilce (from the step.....) That didn't suit my family needs, so I would just say best to go & find a vehicle with them to try first before making the decision.
It'll leave a sour taste at the price if you find they just don't feel right for you.

On this stornaway, I reckon they look 'orrible !

BUT, on this Black Westminster they look nice - I think because the front splitter bar is the same colour, looks more in keeping

But, I like the fixed look on mine and colour blends in nice :

To anyone who has deployable side steps:

How long does it take the steps to deploy after opening a door? I have visions of sitting there like Lord Muck while the steps slowly make their majestic appearance.
Hopefully they deploy before you've had time to swing your legs out assuming you're in a hurry.
If I had to wait for the steps before getting out I may look to getting fixed steps fitted and forgo the wow factor.
