Does anyone get an inspection done before buying a car

Hi All,

Well as per the post - has anyone had an inspection done - I have always wanted to but at almost 250-300 a pop it seems rather expensive

Also any experiences of how good these are, who were they done by and what does it entail. Is it a very detailed inspection or just an MOT review sort of thing

??? Inspection? As in inspection 1 and 2? If so, that's just another word for service. Or am I missing something here! Previously..

Laughing That makes sense now... This could be an interesting post Thumbs Up personally, no, never had it done, but I do quite a bit of research before I buy on specific faults and check the car myself. Lucky so far! Previously..

lots of buying advice here on the forum and wiki, but most peeps are either fairly savvy in common sense and/or have knowledgeable friend they can take along...top thursday tip is to switch everything on/off especially as the range has so many toys.. ... - .- -.

Same as Contra above , have been very lucky so far never had any RAC or AA inspection carried out on any car that I have ever bought , saying that most of them have been out the wrapper so really no need , only my latest two purchases have been new or nearly new tho , touch wood no problems so far Thumbs Up ====================================

"Open Mike Night " sounded like a lot of fun until i found out i was going to an Autopsy

Never have done, got burnt a couple of times (rotten Mini, rotten Ford Ka) but my own fault for either buying on spec on eBay or not looking over the car closely enough.

Newer cars costing bigger money get a thorough check by me, wiggling everything, and if its a car you know its easier to go and look for the problem areas.

If buying another FFRR I would probably take my RAC with me and plug in to see what faults exist!

Service History, MOT certificates usually count for something .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

I haven't but it would depend on the outlay, car, warranty and overall condition.

Would you drop £xxk on a Maserati quattroporte without an impartial inspecton? Then again there are a few forum members who have forgot more than I know about mechanics. Very Happy

Used to work for Local Authority years ago and to get an employee car loan they insisted you had one carried out by their MOT centre/workshop - they picked up crash damage I missed on an Astra from a non franchised dealer who still tried to force me buy it Thumbs Up

Few years ago bought a FL1 for swmbo and took it to local LR specialist who looked it over for free and advised me it had crash damage so got a refund as bought it from franchised dealer with LR approved warranty Bow down

Two lucky escapes but depends who you are buying from Confused Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Still hoping for a S2 one day!

I took my FF to my mechanic before private purchase - he identified a few small problems which gave me some bargaining power, and re-assured me that no major problems. Thumbs Up

He tells me he often does this for his customers.

Just remembered.. I have twice before insisted a car be put through an MOT test before I purchased... That is a cheap way of doing it I suppose. Previously..

I've never bothered - I think I know more about Range Rovers than the average RAC geezer, plus I've got the added incentive to spot anything dodgy - it's my money I'm about to spend!

I always take a friend to look around the car... even if they are not a trained mechanic, they will be more objective as its not their purchase/future pride & joy.

Amazing how some buyers lose all control when they are buying a car they really want. When I sold the first Cobra I built, the guy turned up and drooled over it for about 30 minutes, listened to the engine, then paid for it in cash. No test drive, nothing Shocked . Had to stifle a laugh when he stalled it three times trying to get it off the drive Laughing Lloyd Barnes

It can suit both parties to use an MOT as a pre-sale check although its not totally comprehensive it touches the important bases of bearings, bushes, track rods, ball joints, cracked alloys, split tyres, obvious oil leaks, cats not working, bulbs, seat belts etc....

I also covers the seller as they can say the car was checked over in detail just before sale.... Definitely worth the £50 max.
