Winter tyre choices.

I have a set of 19" alloys and am looking for winter tyres for the Westminster. I've tried Vredestein Wintrac Extreme on a RRS and they were very good, but I have an option of trying two other makes and wondered if anyone has experience of them either good or bad.

They are 255/55 R19:

Goodyear Ultra Grip for £194.32 or Michelin Latitude Alpin for £206.04, each fitted. Prices are very good considering where I live and I fancy a change from Vredestein unless I'm swamped with bad reports.

Not sure you will get better than Vredestein

if you want dedicated winter tyres go with the Vreds, I am running them all year round, no problems and very good off road too, didn't get stuck deep in mud with a twin axle loaded ifor williams hitched up behind.

if you want an alternative multipurpose all round another good option in 19" is General AT's

Cooper Zeon LTZ now come in a variety of sizes. A good AT pattern seems a better way to go to me than pure winter tyres. Unless you swap winter and summer over. Discovery 4 HSE

Andy,

I know the LTZ's now come in more of the 20" sizes, but shame they don't do an exact replacement for the FFRR 255/50/20.

What's the closest you can get? I am guessing it's the 275/50/20 they do, but I'm not sure if OE RR 20" alloys are ok for the extra width and if they might foul on any steering components.

Does anyone know? Discovery 4 HSE

100% right as ever Stan. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

The 275/45x20 on the standard 20" alloy wheel has no rubbing issues. Thumbs Up

Looks great and gives better protection of the alloys when "touch" parking if you know what I mean. Andy....

Interesting replies but not very relevant to the original post unfortunately.

I assume nobody has tried Goodyear Ultra Grip tyres or Michelin Latitude Alpin tyres, so have decided to go for the Goodyear ones as they do better overall than Vredestein in the tests I've read.

Just fitted the Goodyear Ultra Grip 255/55 R19 tyres on the Westminster and no real complaints so far. A little more noise than the original Continentals that came off probably due to the different tread for winter use, but happy to report the wear rate has been excellent over the first 20 miles of use.

I was disappointed when presented with the bill as I had not noticed the "plus vat" after the price given. Big Cry

Andy,

How about prices for 255/60/18 x 4 supply only, can't strectch to the Vred Wintrac, already spunked too much on tyres this year so cost is an issue. I only use the 18's in the winter so open to suggestions. Thanks.
