Which engine?

I run a 2011 Vogue which I love, it is the best car that an have ever owned.  After a few howlers with LR including a new Vogue where the gearbox exploded at 4,000 miles and a Disco that was in for repair for 3 1/2 months, LR has truly made up for the disappointment with this incredible car with thrilling performance.

I put a deposit down for the new FFRR last September and I have been looking at the specs.  My head says 3.0 plus toys as it is  claimed it has the same performance as the current 4.4 but my heart says new 4.4 as it will have the same incredible engine, although 1 second quicker 0-60 is difficult to justify.  I really don't want to go over £80k so it's either 4.4 basic or 3.0 loaded.  I am concerned that if i go for the 3.0 I will be regretting not having the 4.4 - I am also tempted to keep my current car for a few years, but I like the idea of a completely new model.  What do you guys think?

I think you answered your question Roy! I take it your post is there to justify to yourself that you should buy the TDV8.

If you think you may regret if you buy the 3 litre than there is really no point in doing so.
The sensible thing would be to drive both versions and then decide which is right for you.
But once a thought is in ones mind it is difficult to be objective about the comparison.

In the end if is really all about what you want / like not what you should do.
No point driving a big 4x4 and worrying about if a more envoiremently frendly engine would be a more snsible choice.

We all should really not drive at all or if it can not be avoided, drive a hybrid car that does 70 mpg.
But where would be the fun in that?

Go and buy the big engine and spec it as far as you can go.

Add £5k to your budget and get the 4.4 Vogue SE and really enjoy it - you'll get some of the extra £5k back when you sell it because its a Vogue SE rather than a Vogue, and importantly you will enjoy the ownership experience far more than you will a 'compromised' experience. Just do it.

Please do yourself a favour and look at the Evoque forum before even thinking about giving up your 11MY 4.4 TDV8 for an L405. The Evoque launch was far from smooth and this is why I am holding back until at least 14MY so they sort out the problems. If I'm going to be spending circa £100k on a new vehicle, it needs to be trouble free for the most part. Some of the problems on the Evoque were just sloppy and on a flagship vehicle, these just aren't acceptable. They can say they've tested it for the millions of miles that they say but they also said that for the Evoque and look what happened there!

Hold onto your 11MY Vogue whilst they iron out the problems. You'll also then probably be able to pick up a demonstrator Autobiography for the money you want to spend on brand new!

It's not just about the figures. I would suggest the V8 is going to have more power and torque in the right place at the right time. It should be a much better drive.

If nothing else you are going to miss the noise of the V8, as you know it sounds superb. I had the TDV6 RRS for 3 years and it always sounded like a blow torch under load where as the V8 sounds like thunder. Not a bad engine by any means but RR's need V8's to be complete.

The engine is often overlooked for more trivial toys however it is absolutely fundamental to the vehicle. I would go with a 4.4 base spec, it's hardly basic after all!

Don't forget it's not just the engine.
There are a number of changes, including the TDV6 3.0 having smaller brakes than the others.

I was sold on the 3.0, seemed to make a lot of sense in terms of performance, economy and price.
Now I'm not so sure.

But having said that I'm not buying until they have been building them for at least a year.

Land Rover are famous for putting vehicles into production and then sorting out the issues.
It's been like this for years!
There is no way on Earth I will stump up 80k for an early model and risk having several trips to the dealers.
For me that would absolutely kill any enjoyment from having the vehicle and make me never want a Land Rover again.

Give me a well sorted one with the bugs ironed out please, preferably second hand so somebody else had all the grief. Thumbs Up (and a hefty whack of depreciation!)

The current TDv8 is a peach of an engine and it will be slightly upgraded in the new model. So that's definitely the engine to go for.

Hello everyone. I am really grateful for all your feedback. Looks like the sensible thing to do is to wait. I have had a few bad experiences with new cars and I really don't want to go through that again. I have had my Vogue for a year now without one problem, don't want to go back to the bad old days and believe me I will get the bad one!

I am almost at the point of getting my deposit back and waiting, I really want the Autobiography and another year will be worth it. Mine will be 2 years then, hopefully the residuals would have levelled out and I can then get a good one.

Understood Roy, but you will kick yourself for 2 reasons:

1. LR have gone to extraordinary lengths to ensure the quality of even the very first delivery.
2. When you see one on the road in the flesh and you want it but you can't have it!

Roy, I bought a new Evoque earlier this year and have had no problems. I am sure this is not the case with every Evoque but have to say the build quality is a step above the 11 plate FFRR I bought this week. So I wouldn't be too worried about early build problems. MY23 D350 HSE

Well I came across one today, a vogue se sdv6 and can say its sprightlier than a d4 xs sdv6 so the weight saving must be good and the engine have a bit more grunt too! FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
