Look for a 4 digit code printed on the sidewall of the tyre sometimes in a slightly recessed oval.

Reads first 2 digits are the week of production ie 35 would be the 35th week of the year
Second 2 digits are the year so 09 would be 2009.

So 1308 would be somewhere in April 2008. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

What are the 2 different tread patterns ?

One has a 'bar' between the Z's, is this a quick way to identify the types?

If it has an M&S marking like below that's a mud and snow tyre.

Doesn't mean they're proper winter tyres though. For that you need sipes - these little cuts you see in the tyre.

Also, if you put the tyre details into google you will find a lot of information.

The ones with the bar down the middle are Pirelli scorpion zero asymmetrico, the ones without the bar are scorpion zeros.

Generally the zeros are what would be fitted as standard, though as long as the others are 255/50 r20 109y or 255 55 r19 111v then they will be ok

The asymmetrical tyres are more sporty, possibly not m and s rated. The zeros (no bar) are good all round tyres and generally rated as one of the best for the Ff. Not proper winters though, but will be sufficient for most situations in the uk! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Agree that M&S doesn't automatically mean proper winter, but I thought that snowflake symbol meant they were proper winter tyres ? Confused

M&S means nice open tread for mud & snow, 'winter' means lots of sipes so they grip better on ice
