Toyo Proxes ST or Vredstein Wintrac 4 Xtreme XL ?

I'm running out of tread on my second set of Pirelli Scorpions but I haven't been hugely impressed with the performance in snow and the wear seems quite high.

So I am considering changing to either the Toyo or Vredsteins - which also appear to be cheaper - which one would the panel suggest ?

Dont know about the Toyos, but I run mine on Wintrac Extremes in the winter. They'll do all you want in the snow and IMO work very well but they are aimed at sub 7 degree temps so not the ideal tyres for the summer (even this year!). Suggest you get a spare set of wheels and swap twice a year - works well for me! Mike - MPx

Sadly, I'm trying to reduce the outlay - so two sets of wheels aren't a sensible option for me at the moment (unless anyone has a cheapish set of 19" wheels with tyres that they want to get rid of or even swap for some 7 spoke 20" wheels)!

I have a set of original 19 inch Vogue wheels with new Cooper Zenon tires on it (less than 500miles) , as I swapped to 20 inch wheels.
Those are available, please send me a PM if you are interested.

Running Vreds all year would probably cause an insurance issue - they are designated winter tyres - that means their performance significantly above 7 degrees is worse than regular tyres, so if you had an accident during our blistering summer, then you may be on sticky ground so to speak.......

Ah - interesting point re insurance, although I suppose that you could argue it's merely a wear issue for you since the tyres will offer far better stopping performance in the summer anyway (of course ignoring that you lose most logical arguments with insurance companies).

Big difference between Toyo and Vredestein.......... if you are on 20" you could go to 275/45x20 and then you have options with General AT and Cooper LTZ, both of which will work all year round.

What would you rather be driving on...... Winter tyres in the Summer or Summer tyres in the Winter, yes insurance can come into it but depends on insurance companys, we still have many customers who use the winter tyre all year round and finding no isues at all.

We do quite oftern have second hand alloys available for winter or second sets.

Always happy to help with tyre choice and only a phone call away. Thumbs Up

Sadly, not true.

I used to think that - softer compound, so they must be better, but for some reason it doesn't seem to work like that. I didn't really notice on the FFRR, but when I put winters on our Mini, I can really feel the handling difference. So I did some research & this What Car test seems to verify it.

We have done quite a bit of testing of our own with winter vs. summer tyres and don't agree with some of these tyre tests, in fact of the testing on D3/4's on 255/55x19 Vredestein Wintrac 4 Xtreme vs. Pirelli Scorpion the Vredestein was equall in the dry and better in the wet, and on snow no contest.

This was not a scientific test as regards the sort of test What Car would do, more of a laymans test.

At the end of the day you get used to driving conditions I think after a few hundred yards, bit like driving a strange car for the first time.

I would happily use Vredestein's all year round.
