V12 Range Rover P38 Prototype.

I had heard about it years ago, but these are the first photos I have seen of the BMW V12 engine installed in the P38, and the proposed styling changes.

Interesting.

I once came across something P38 based and VERY fast, late one night a couple of miles from Gaydon. Might well have been this. Certainly wasn't a production engine!

It obviously didn't stay in that car:

My guess is that this reg ended up on a normal car.

The one in the pics has all sorts of experimental stylings on it front and back, so I doubt they would have made it into a production vehicle and sold it Discovery 4 HSE

The wrirte states at the end...'I wonder where RR would be today had it built that engine...'

With record global sales and still the undoubted market leader, I struggle to think of any improvement. Engines are good, strong and powerful, so maybe a V12 model would have been a bit of a flop?

Or, just maybe, it would have strengthened the P38's reliability record with all those 4.6's falling over with porus cylinder heads?

Then again, wasn't that why the L322 came to be the way it was? As a total departure from the P38? Rietzle hated it anyway, so the P38 was, probably quite rightly, doomed. Si. <This is my name.

Remarkably similar concepts to latter L322 headlight styling I think as well. V8 or else ...

James Taylor did a great article about it in LRE in the mid 2000's.

It was illustrated with similar pics, but not the exact same ones.

The engin is so large they had to fit the battery in the boot! l=Oo\________/oO=l l:OolΞΞΞΞΞΞΞloO:l

I was thinking about this only the other day, I remember talking to a Range Rover salesman in 1999 and he was saying there was talking of it happening, I hope a couple of these cars are out there! Would love to see how they handled the power.

I doubt they are left, i bet after the testing the bits were ripped from them and they either returned to standard or were broke down for parts.

The 750i engine is a lovely unit as above would have been nice after the 2.5dse 4.0 v8 and then that in the range it would have a much better reputation and probably turned out to be the longer lasting unit Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Hmm, I think the sticky-back-plastic lights may not have worked too well on a road-going prototype...
