the header tanks are prone to getting pin holes, and they can be very fine, i had one and it looked like a hair coming of the tank. 2nd the cap can leak, wrap some whit tissue around the neck and you will see if there is any leaks.. V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

What gives you the idea you have a water leak? I don't mean in a derogatory way but what are your symptoms? Do you get a puddle under the car or does the coolant level drop in the tank over time? The 4.4 suffers from a few known problems. They are from most common to worst; rads are prone to go in the bottom left, hoses leak/split, header tanks crack, water pumps fail, transmission coolers leak, valley pans leak/weap and finally the head gasket. If you can give us some more details we can give you more help. |

Hi Rob, no coolant under the car. It uses coolant/water when the car is used. I also very occasionally get "transmission overheat" but half of the time its when the car is first started? How the hell can the transmission overheat before its off the drive! P.S your avatar is messing my head up slightly. |

Sounds like the transmission is a dodgy sensor in the gearbox.

I'd say around 1.5 litres a week, thats around 150 miles. I see a lamp and a "bush" in the bottom right hand corner. |

Personally I wouldn't use radweld untill I knew what I was sealing. 1.5L does sound alot. I would check all your hoses first and prob your rad. The 4.4 does have a water/oil cooler. Not heard of that happening but with FFRR ownership anything is possible. I would think with a leak that size it would be showing itself somewhere. Have you had any over pressuring or overheating? On my 02 I had two separate leaks. The easy one was a cracked header. Difficult to see but the white staining was the clue and when I took it off it was obvious in the main body. The hard one was fixed at a dealer after much searching and was a small pipe hidden somewhere at the back of the engine. Very cheap part but huge labour cost to find/fix it. Both got through about the same amount of coolant as you suggest....but it will get worse. Also be very careful of overheating the gearbox...thats a whole other can of worms and even more expensive to fix. Good luck... Mike - MPx

I'll second the leak from the small pipe at the back of the engine. I can't remember the exact words my village mechanic used to describe how hard it was to get to but I'm sure you can imagine!

I had a leak on my engine from the rear hose, very common problem. I looked for the leak over a few days then one day whilst driving home the hose let go and dumped about 3ltr of water out. The hose was an easy fix but you need to remove the plastic cabin filter enclosure which is attached by two bolts to the bulkhead. The hose cost about £15 for an OEM part, about an hour to fit.
