FRANCE - Article published the Friday 02 March 2012 - Latest update : Friday 02 March 2012
New French law makes alcohol tests mandatory in every car

Drivers could be asked to show their alcohol testers to police

It will be mandatory in France for all motorists to have a breathalyser test in the car, under a new rule to take effect on 1 July.

The move is part of a bid to reduce drink driving which is the cause of one in three road deaths in France.

It will apply to all motorised land vehicles except mopeds, and drivers caught without the test in their car will face a fine of 11 euros from 1 November.

So which is it?

Though the law went into effect Sunday, there is a four-month grace period while everyone adapts– partially because after the government mandated that everyone buy a breathalyzer, there was a shortage of breathalyzer kits in the country.

Yes Thanks Stan I think it was you that told me.
post was surpossed to be a joke.

However if we are being serious the breath test kits became legal on the 1st July.
However there is a period of grace until November but if you are stopped without one befoe then the police will sell you one at the roadside for Ten euros. They have also removed all the warning signs for speed cameras, You are not allowed to have a Sat nav that detects or shows speed camera locations and it will be confiscated and they lowered the drink drive limit to well below ours. The driver must have a Hi viz vest in the car ( Not in the boot)and it is recommended that you have them for all passengers ( but dont have to be in the car).
And spare lamps, warning triangle as before. For some strange reason spare Xenon lamps are not required to be carried?? Vehicles with a train weight over 3.5 tonnes ( FF and big van?) should show 90 KMH stickers on the rear Mine was a blue one! Smile

Interesting if you have a sat nav that does does not allow you to turn off speed cameras. I have a mental picture of the French Rozzeurs using a cro-bar to lever out your factory nav Laughing

On a serious note I was just about to buy a 5" Garmin to go in our Auto-Sleeper Campervan but it has Speed Cameras as standard and I don't think they can be turned off?
