Hissing sound from rear (drivers side) wheel

Heard yesterday morning but appears to be intermittent and no change in suspension height after a long motorway journey (and no warning messages) - is this a "wheel off and spray the air suspension with soapy water test" ?

Is it a click then a hiss ? If so could just be the car levelling itself out . 2008 MY Supercharged

Sadly just a hiss - it seems to self level quite happily without any clicks or hissing.

Are you sure it's not just the rear suspension dropping to access height?
Mine drops a wee bit on the rear when I turn it off to allow access to the boot.

Could be the pressure relief valve at the compressor dumping excess air as the car comes to a halt.

Try putting it in off road hight and leave over night. If its down at one corner I would say you have a leak Crying or Very sad

Left in off road height overnight and it was the same height at each corner in the morning - so maybe it was a pressure relief valve at the compressor dumping excess air (I first noticed this on a warm day).

Most FF's wont achieve full height with an air leak... Most leaks are masked somewhat by the construction of the bags and as they extend the leak gets bigger, hence most not achieving full off road height...

Hmmm - I didn't of course measure the actual height reached Craig, just that the car moved up !

However, whilst on a couple of 250 mile drives this weekend there was a dashboard warning message along the lines of "suspension height adjustment off, normal height only" and the lights went off on the height control display.

When driving back in cooler weather last night, the lights were all on again and no messages - so I'm starting to think that there is a leak somewhere (matching the intermittent hiss) and the compressor is running too long and possibly overheating.

Sounds like my local garage will be getting a visit - I couldn't find a leak with the rear wheels off on Sunday morning, but it doesn't hiss all the time.

Have you tried taking your spare wheel out and checking if the leak is from the compressor, or is the hiss definatly ouside the car?

If the leak is other than in an air spring, I agree.

My experience is that most air spring leaks occur where the bag "rolls over", as this is the highest-stress area on the rubber. Excluding failed seals at the ends, of course, which aren't all that common.
If the bag has developed a leak at the roll-over in standard height, the leak could be sealed when you're at motorway height or off-road height.
Checking for an air spring leak would require setting at EACH height & measuring, then leaving it overnight with the system disabled (leave a door open on the P38, pretty sure that does it on the FFRR as well) and measuring in the morning.
If you don't do that at every height, you might miss a leak.
In fact, just putting it at offroad height almost guarantees the fish-mouth crack in the air spring will be sealed if the leak is at the roll-over at standard height.
If it drops from offroad height overnight, you could have valveblock leaks, airline leaks, etc, etc.

Get all up in there with the soapy water, checking at ALL heights. Jim

Ok - more weekend testing is obviously needed - thanks for the hints on finding the potential leak!

As an aside, when I was jacking up the car to remove the wheels are the weekend, the only way that I could stop the suspension adjusting itself was to lock the suspension in access mode (I tried drivers door left open, boot lids left open and passenger door left open - but each time I raised the car it adjusted the suspension).
