How much is this going to cost me?

My 2004 Td6 lunched the turbo last night on the A1.

As bad luck would have it I had my two young daughters in the back (shouting/crying/playing), radio on, windows down etc so didn't hear it until it was too late. I was doing motorway speeds fully laden with 4 and luggage.

The net result was a complete power reduction and a white cloud out the back that looked like Chernobyl going bang. After it had cooled I checked and there was zero oil in the engine. Nada.

So, the turbo oil seals are completely FUBARed, as are the splines/bearing(s) as when I shut everyone up it sounded like I had a terminal wheel bearing failure, but coming from the turbo when on boost.

So, just how badly bummed am I going to get by this latest exciting moment in Range Rover ownership? It will be based on my great local indy (who is looking at it as we speak). It has not been started since it pulled up last night as I didn't want to seize the engine and kaput that too.

I'm not a very happy bunny.

Sorry to hear about your breakdown, Benjj.

Just out of curiosity. Have you changed your crankcase breather to the new type as shown in the thread below?

Nope, not changed to that new fangled vortex dooberry, maybe I should have!

Just heard from the garage, seems I stopped in time so the enging is not completely battered and a new turbo and a few peripherals should have it sorted.

Very annoyed as my new Mk4 nav arrived today and I don't have a car to put it in!

I've also decided that as my commute is only 3 miles each way I am going to buy a cheap shed to use for the trips to work. Looking at a 1983 Porsche 944 tomorrow, like the look of it.

I have a receipt for £1272.35 for a fully reconditioned turbo, fully fitted from the previous owner of my car shortly before I brought it.

Thats with a reputable garage in Bournmouth. Reformed

if you do it yourself dont forget to clean out the intercooler by leaving the bottom hose on then por in 1 gallon of petrol, let it soak for an hour then jack drivers side up and drop the bottom hose off and leave to drain and vapours to leave the cooler for a few hours . if you dont you could have over run (see utube) for the over run problems. i did my won turbo its prett easy a days job of and on. god luck
