Haven't read the full topic but seen you were looking at spaniel's, we have a
20 month old springer spaniel, he is very laid back, excellent with the kids (5&7), good with our cats and we trained him to a whistle in about a day, we couldn't have a better family dog, loves long walks but never been to bouncy around the house, what I would really recommend is puppy socialisation classes as when we are out waking be is not interested in other dogs in the slightest, good luck
