SuperCharger removal and oil in the throttle! | |
Hello fellow Range Rover lovers!!
I had sent a post to another forum a couple of days ago, but no reply yet, hope you don't mind adding it here since I'm running out of time before appointment for fixing dent and paint work due to lady hitting my vehicle while parked!
I'm trying to remove the supercharger on my 2006 Supercharged full size Range Rover, mainly because I have the "coolant raining under the bell housing" problem. Fact is I have not been able to determine which hose is split, or if it could even be an intercooler manifold gasket (I believe that there is no coolant at the gasket, but not really sure). So anyway, I cannot risk pulling the hose from under the supercharger and passing the new one through since I want to see what is there and be sure where the leak is coming from. What I do know is that the leak is NOT from hose areas in front nor behind the supercharger...., definitely underneath (valley has its puddles).
My questions about all this are:
1) Does the Supercharger have a gasket underneath it as it does above it? Manual just says to clean the surfaces and re-attach. Parts catalogue does not show any gasket there either. but since there are gaskets on on top and behind I would like to be sure it requires no gasket or sealant. I have not removed it yet (I'm at that stage precisely) so can't tell.
2) On removing the throttle body, I saw a little oil puddle in the elbow which I imagine is an accumulation over time and gets trapped there due to the sensor (see pictures). In one of the images the oil has been smeared a bit with little finger to show its colour. The supercharger outlet pipe is also moist with oil especially at the side gaskets. Is all this oil normal? Do I have another problem here that I must tackle? It is obviously engine oil, and I would have thought that as air is pushed into the engine, that there would normally be no oil coming out to these areas. If you see the pictures, you'll see like carbon build on one half of the inside of the throttle elbow.... I'm guessing that this could be due to a tiny air leak of the thin gasket that sits on top; it looks in perfectly good shape though! (thats the black gasket visible in the picture).
3) Should I wash out the intercoolers? (de-greaser maybe) or just wipe dry with lint free cloth?
4) When trying to remove the supercharger, there are 2 vertical bolts that hold the front down, which I removed, but how do you release the rear of the supercharger? All I see are 3 horizontal screws which attach the elbow to the supercharger (supposedly they are 6, hope to get access to them as I go along). Do I really have to remove the Throttle elbow just to get to those rear bolts at the back? Is that how I get the supercharger off at the back, or am I missing something? The manual indicates to remove the throttle elbow and virtually everything around it, but then I would have to order that thick rear gasket between supercharger and throttle elbow too, right? (or is it re-usable?)
5) It would be nice to know how the Supercharged version differs....
a) I'm guessing that there is no "intake manifold" as such and its the intercoolers that take on that job
b) Is there no "valley pan gasket" either?I have ordered and that complex hose that goes underneath the supercharger (I call it the Octopus, he he) plus the thick supercharger outlet pipe gasket that sits on top of the supercharger body, plus the 2 intercooler gaskets (similar to intake manifold gaskets). Also have the wide, short elbow hose just behind coolant manifold that sends coolant to the engine,
but nothing else. I didn't think I would have to undo anything else. Well, yes... Have ordered a supercharger kit which includes the coupler. Could have changed it while being there but sadly it won't arrive til February (I live in Venezuela...takes time to get the parts).
Any help would be really appreciated since I'm a bit worried about that oil, whether its normal or not, and also the removal process for the supercharger would be helpful because I would prefer not to disassemble much there at the back.
After that I can hopefully fix the other things which I had in mind.... Changing All fluids, serpentine belts (and pulley, coz of the chirping when cold), rear bushing (rusty bed springs noise, he he), minute coolant leak (evaporating so could not find it, maybe was from this, maybe not), put new rear lamp which was cracked, etc
Thanks for even reading all this! You have to have patience just to go through it!!
All the best! ... Christian
