RAC Suspension Calibration - finally got a round tuit

Since changing my front air springs in Dec 11 have been meaning to recalibrate the suspension, as driving home on dark nights meant I got a few flashes (others thinking I was on full beam - a quick flick soon proved them wrong!! Very Happy )

Watched Storey's video on howto do this 3 times and took notes.

With a gravel drive it take a bit of work to get level ground, but with a ladder, a spirit level and some carpet tiles I got the FFRR to sit on something like level at all four corners.

Fired up the old XP laptop with RSW All Comms installed and got an update (not used since 6/11/11) and had to reactivate with an email/activation. No problems.

Started up the car, ensured in Standard Height and waited a few minutes. Window down. Plugged cable into OBD port, plugged usb end into PC. Restarted RSW All Comms. All connected. Ran through all the fault readers to see if anything new had cropped up, and pleased to say no new ones apart from the Transfer Box Module telling me I had a low battery voltage (?).

Now into calibration. Clicked Open, selected rim size and then clicked on Measure. Up goes the car, up and up Smile Now wait for three minutes (fag break Wink) Then measured all four corners bottom of wheel rim to bottom of wheel arch (Front Left is UK RHD passenger side). Entered these numbers into the boxes then clicked Get Heights. Not too much difference. So clicked Calibrate and down comes the car. Clicked on Close.

Reached into the car and selected Off Road Height, car had to think about this for a while then went up much higher than usual (nice). Selected Standard Height again and car settled down, but still higher than it usually is, but all nice and level. I measured all round fronts @ 5mm different, rears the same.

A straight forward operation, but requires level ground, a fully functioning air suspension, and patience to wait for the car to fully complete its height changes. Was tempted to increase the rear heights by @ an inch as the car always looks like ti is leaning back ( a Range Rover trait if you look at most Classics & P38As Wink) but will save that for another day. Storey doesn't recommend it.

@Joe90, I have EXACTLY the same operation, changed the airsprings front both from island4x4 (complete struds - is that the right meaning?-), and afterwards I make the RSW all comms calibration, but at the next day the level was ok, first it was too high, and hanged down in the backyard. If you write in the measure wrong numbers (I add 2cm n the front), the car comes in a good level. So, my english is not so good to describe it in the perfect form, but everybody mean, what I mean...

P.S. my EAs compressor fitting runs and runs and runs, also new parts for the steering column and the key rubbers...

Kind regards from germany! Uli

Sorry for this hijack! Whistle

Meerbusch: Out of interest what is the old air compressor piston ring made from? And is your new one made of the same stuff? [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

@Rob2529: The old piston-rings are polycarbonat, and the new (manufactured at WABCO) are a mix from polycarbonat and teflon. But it is not only the piston-ring, you also have a new cylinder. When you feel over the inner of the old and new cylinder, you feel the difference! It would be like new brake-rubbers on old brake-discs. Also very important the change of the rusty springs in the near of the dryer-patron.

Kind regards, Uli
