Can one update the factory stereo to aftermarket?

I have located a great deal on a one-owner L322 td6 with full service records. BUT it has only a cassette player in the dash. The factory cassette is hidden behind that big folding multi-purpose display screen.

It is at all feasible to upgrade that cassette unit to an aftermarket stereo head? Has anybody here done it?

BMW cars of the same period use CAN bus, so upgrading their stereo can be a steaming lump of, uh, hell. I owned an E38 with a factory cassette, and after reading about the needed upgrade steps, decided to just suffer with the cassette instead because I planned to sell the car anyway. This L322 would be rather a keeper though, so CD and USB tunes are a requirement.

Thanks Reno, on assignment in France.

Ah, the irony might just kill me if that turns out to be true. Whistle I'll ring up the seller and pop by for another look. He is willing to take my oil-leaking, noisy, underpowered D2 td5 in trade, which makes him a saint in my book. Reno, on assignment in France.

I don't think many RR cassette players have ever seen a cassette.

There are numerous options even if this RR does not have a CD changer - everything from iPods, to SD Card drives to USB to DVB-T tuners. Do some searching here, plenty of info.

I iPod not, but USB would be fine. Thanks for the other suggestions too.

I'm actually checking with the dealer on purchase of a CD changer for the glovebox. The vehicle is pre-wired but it was apparently never installed. Reno, on assignment in France.
