I've wanted DAB in my FF since I bought her and have been looking at what's possible for some time.

The TUA-100 thing is rare and expensive when available on eBay. The last one went for over £300 on eBay a few weeks ago and there's no telling when another will appear.

Many of you are familiar with previous owner EVOEng's Intravee install on my RR. I never really got in with Intravee and was happy to ditch it.

So, newly-released Alpine Ezi-DAB was installed this afternoon by Bannings Car Audio in Guildford.

A decent glass-mount aerial went in and a cable to control my iPod. The Ezi-DAB handles both playing and charging. And, unlike Intravee, you don't need the iPod playing to charge it.

My only concern was where to mount it. I didn't want anywhere too conspicuous.

It's a small unit, thankfully. Works very well.

So, what do you think?

With the labour, aerial, AUX box and an iPod extension cable, £400.

The basic uninstalled price for the unit is £270-ish.

By comparison, the last TUA-100 example went for £320 on eBay and you'd need cables and an aerial on top of that. That's IF you could get hold of one. Si. <This is my name.

How does this connect to the stereo system without an intravee? Do you have to lose the CD changer? Thanks  FFRR Vogue 2003 4.4V8 - Epsom Green & Ivory

I didn't have the CD changer as EVOEng had removed it after it stopped working.

That was why he fitted Intravee.

I just have a bigger glovebox now.

Intravee isn't compatible with DAB without the Alpine TUA-100. As they're as rare as hens teeth these days, Intravee had to go. The Ezi-DAB uses another hidden Alpine box of tricks and a seperate hidden box to provide an AUX output for the Alpine box to connect to.

The RR's display now shows CD-01 when the Ezi-DAB is running. Unfortunately, that's the only role the colour screen plays now. But where I've got the Ezi-DAB positioned, the new screen is clear and looks right.

I can now, at least, have my colour screen showing all trip computer functions rather than simply my iPod playlist.

This is the answer to my ipod prayers in the FFRR!!

I'm going to ask Baris to do my BM54 upgrade soon, the amp, firmware and the AUX output upgrade - then this just plugs into the AUX - done!

I'll use my ipod touch and leave that in the glovebox permanently connected and get my ipod control and DAB too - yee haa!!

Agreed. That would be handy.

But, for me, my FF has the factory phone kit and all I need is an iPhone adaptor to replace the current Nokia one.

Trouble is - it's still aftermarket - something that used the display in the car and showed all the information that is broadcast would be better (track name etc) - but not achievable I suspect.

Does this system dive off and pick up local traffic reports?

I agree that the aftermarket thing isn't desirable, but what other options are there?

I looked into one of these hidden boxes that give DAB via an FM signal. That would have used the FF's colour screen, but I wasn't given an entirely glowing recommendation for them by Bannings.

As said above, the Alpine TUA-100 DAB box that works with Intravee is very rare and now pretty expensive secondhand.

Then there's alternative Alpine DAB / DVB boxes but no iPod connectivity.

The size of this thing appealed. It's pretty small, so relatively unobtrusive and nicely hard-wired so no external cables other than one out of the glovebox (my choice) for the iPod.

Traffic reports? I suspect so, but haven't played around with it. For me, just having Planet Rock is sufficient. Ezi-DAB does have loads of other radio features, such as a Favourites area, the ability to pause live broadcasts for up to 15 minutes and a few other bits that I haven't explored yet.

The installation WOULD have been even neater and very 'factory'. The intention was to mount it underneath the tray area it now sits on top of. The tray would have been removed and the unit installed, flush, underneath. It fitted perfectly and looked truly as if LR had intended it to be there.

But Ezi-DAB (annoyingly, in this case) uses two small buttons on top for power, mode and favourites. With the flush mounting, we couldn't get to those buttons. Really frustrating!

Bannings are working on seeing if those buttons could be remote-linked to hidden buttons elsewhere on the FF's dash or somewhere unseen. If that's possible, then the installation will redone. Si. <This is my name.

Suppose if you really wanted it hidden, you could mount it inside the cubby box between the seats, but then you'd not have as easy access to any of the buttons...........
