IT advice on setting up a VPN

i'm looking to set up a VPN so my dad can watch iplayer etc from abroad when he is away working.
is this a straight forward thing to do?
i can knock up a basic PC to sit in the loft out of the way, is there any particular o/s & software to put on it etc?

cheers
steve

If your dad has Sky at home, this might be easier :-

BTW I supply that information on the basis that the VPN user is a UK TV licence payer and therefore entitled to watch UK TV programmes.

I'm sure someone with better IT skills will be along with a detailed "how to...." for you but I for one can confirm it works Thumbs Up

I was in France last year and just for fun tried both iPlayer and Sky Go on my laptop whilst hooked into a local wifi connection - Initially no joy....obviously Embarassed So I remoted to my office server and reactivated my VPN settings and then reconnected using VPN.

Once connected to a UK server via VPN both Sky Go and iPlayer worked so watched a bit of live footy Whistle

My understanding is that a UK VPN connection "masks" the international IP address and therefore all these UK based services work just as if you were back in "Blighty" - subject to a reasonable broadband speed of course Thumbs Up

there's loads of cheap/free VPN services out there, download and go, nothing too taxing.

You can google it, but I heard this was a decent service

I use a SQUID proxy when working overseas. Works like a champ and the only client settings are web proxy ones.

how does squid work? do you have to set up something at home and remote in or is it a mask for the IP?

You don't want a VPN, you want a UK proxy

Your dad can easily watch iplayer by subscribing himself with a vpn service while travelling for abroad. Currently I am using PureVPN to get access to specific region content that canno be accessed abroad.
