I have the exact same car as you and it doubles as Rottweiler transport.

For a Rottweiler with a big appettite and who gets car sick. Awesome!

I went for a genuine half dog guard which I got off eBay for £55. This one -



It's a doddle to fit and remove, but I just leave it in all the time.

And I went for a cheapo floor liner, again from eBay. For £30 delivered I wasn't expecting much, but it's great. It protects everything from mud, sand and general dog filth.

It's also deep (maybe 1.5 / 2 inches) and as such it catches everything and it's very easy to clean, even when it's got half an inch of dog sick sloshing around in it....ask me how I know!

Between those two items I'm happy to chuck the dog in the boot. You can get a more complete liner but I had one in my ML and they don't keep their shape very well and the dog kept ripping bits of it. This way I may have to wipe drool off the back of the leather and hoover the side carpets but it's no dramas really.

If you shoot, you need a dog box. It keeps your mucky dog separate from your gear and keeps some order in the rear. I have my box in the rear left hand side, the rhs is used for gear bags, boots and birds in a tub. I have a purpose built raised wooden/oak shelf above the dog box running the full width of the boot space to carry guns and cartridges on. In front of this is a LR dog guard to stop the lot ending up in the front when off road. This way I can carry 4 to 5 guns / shooters, 8 to 10 shotguns on the shelf (as sometimes we are double gunning or spare guns) a dog or two at a pinch. Coats cartridges and other gear - and all kept clean and tidy.

I don't bother with seat covers, any mud wipes off quickly with a bucket of hot water and towel. I have carpet mats for summer, and rubbers over these in the winter.

Vogue, what dog box do you use? I have a large Golden Retriever and he only likes being on the driver's side.

I have two, one is a Varikennel, the other is a purpose built timber one.

I do not like boxes being too big, all a dog needs to do on a working day is sit, turn round and lie down. Many of the conventional shooting boxes are imho far too large. Some are ridiculously big and let a dog virtually walk round in them, plus they take up the whole of your boot. These are ok for two fat large labs, but I am running small springers so don't need huge boxes.

There is a lot of info on yank shooting web sites re the size of dog boxes, for safety in transport they seem to prefer slightly smaller than us. The Upland Journal web site is well worth a visit.

I've got the half guard in the back of mine, with a hatchbag to cover all the carpety bits and the LR rubber boot liner as well. I was going to do without the boot liner, but the salesman threw it into the deal and it would've been rude to refuse it.

All I need now is something to prevent the hound's wet nose rubbing up against the glass...

I ordered a Hatchbag which was delivered last week. I fitted it this morning and have to say I am very impressed. It fits like a glove and is well made. I also bought the rubber mat, it's not a thick as the RR OEM mat but sufficient.

Got to say, quite impressed as the company have clearly taken time to ensure the upstands fit the contours exactly.
