dual-view touch screen

An off the wall question but is it possible to replace the front face of the touch screen? (without replacing the whole unit)

Mine's got the permanent fingerprints and I'd like to be rid of them if possible.

Ta. Dom.

I can't find the post but I seem to recall that someone here noted that on the dual-view, the screen had an extra "film" layer over the screen which gave rise to the permanent fingerprints, and this could be removed by using baby wipes or some sort of flash wipe equivalent. This got ride of the extra film and made the screen easier to clean, although not sure if this affected the dual-view function or not.

I also looked into this when I bought my car as I thought the screen had fine scratches and concerned that fingerprints could not be cleaned off. Haven't replaced the screen or checked if this is possible but also haven't tried the baby wipes yet as waiting until the marks bother me too much to ignore

edit - found the thread http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic12532....p;start=30

also realised I had checked whether it affected the dual-view and the member who tried it said no difference so this may work! MY11 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - "African Queen"

be careful with solvents, I suggest using microfibre cloth (dry) or special screen wet wipes. Replacing the screen I don't think is an option as far as I know. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Will try the baby wipe trick then. I've heard that before now I come to think of it. Thanks Chaps.

Your only hope is the polish out the marks ( difficult without damaging the front surface as it is usually some for of polyester. Consumer based product usually has resistive touch screens which have a substrate (glass) costing with a fine layer of conduction material (Indium Tin Oxide), the top layer is some form of flexible plastic also coated with ITO and the are small spacers between the two layers to kepp them seperated. They essentially work like a wheatstone bridge where one layer is X and the other layer is Y. When they contact you can calculate the position, commonly know as 4 wire sensors. 5-wire sensors have the x and y and the lower layer and the top membrane is a common plane. Modern products such as iphone etc use what is know a Projective Capactive touch sensors but that is a whole differnt subject.

If you can dissassemble the head unit you may be able to remove the sensor from the LCD and replace the sensor but depending upon age it may be difficult to obtain. If you can find out the make and model I might be able to source some from the far east.

That'll be me then Whistle

The supplied micro fibre cloth does a good job of cleaning finger prints off the screen but if the film is scratched or marked, as mine was, no amount of rubbing would get rid of the coca-cola splash marks left by the careless first owner of my car Big Cry

I though the only option was a new screen but with the usual silly Land Rover prices (£1,800 as I recall Shocked ) as the dealer wouldn't replace it under warranty drastic action was required.

The baby wipe solution does in principle go completely against the grain of what is recommended as it does remove this film layer over the screen BUT I can assure you it has no effect on the viewing pleasure with or without duel view. I now find I use the micro fibre cloth a little more to keep the screen clear but only because I'm a fussy git about a nice clear screen Embarassed

So in summary, if you have just finger prints on the screen stick with the supplied cloth but if you have marks in the film that do not rub off with the cloth and you feel this to the detriment of your viewing experience then I cannot recommend baby wipes enough! They're pretty good at cleaning marks off the leather and door panels too Thumbs Up

Final update on this. Baby wipes work like a champ. See below. 1st photo is after half a dozen horizontal wipes and you can see the stuff cleaning through the film/coating and leaving a clear screen behind. Photo 2 is the finished job and the screen is now nicely sans fingerprints.

What it appears to be is an anti-glare film but it wears through with being touched. Kind of self defeating really on a touch screen. There doesn't appear to be any more glare once it's cleaned off though so I'm a happy boy.
