A good idea, a JE Ebgineering is a must for a TD6, I would probably not rule it out on a TDV8 either!!.

The TDV8 that I test drove was stunning (for a diesel) and I may have got another 8-10 mpg out of it, but I'm home based so have no commute, and as such I'm on 45p a mile every time I leave the house on business. So for me, personally, I couldn't see past that 4.2 S/C howl!

For the specific spec, age and miles I was after I think the equivalent 3.6 would have been between £3k and £5k more to buy. That's at least 20 tanks of fuel!

Oh...and I've just bought shares in BP too.  Past (too many to list, but a few favs)...

I can understand the appeal of the SC but to me it just doesn't suit the character of the RR to drive one quickly, its more about effortless,comfortable driving, plus being brilliant off road if you enjoy it.
If I wanted a fast 4x4 I would go for a Cayenne Turbo.
I know the RR isn't the fastest or the most reliable of the bunch but I still can't help but like them best.

I had a 3.6 V6 24 Valve LWB Shogun which was awesome, but got did she drink petrol, I dont think I ever got more than 17/18 MPG ever I got her as an ex demo but she cost a fortune to run after 2.5 years of owning I changer her to the LWB 3.2 DID much better car and also MPG cost, I missed the petrol but my wallet didn't

so when I came to looking for a FFRR it was a TDV8 without doubt I have got over 30MPG from her on long drives across europe even when she is fully loaded I love driving her even when just popping out

Couldn't agree more. I certainly didn't buy the S/C to be a 'quick' car. If I wanted a quick car I would've kept my 997 Carrera 2S or my M3! In fact my ML420CDi was much quicker too. But having the extra grunt helps with the effortless driving you talk about, it's all about that 40-70mph overtake being as rapid as possible for me.

One of the things that struck me when I drove the S/C was how unbelievably quiet and unruffled it was at 'pottering' speeds. You really have to prod it to awaken the beast!

Anyway, slightly off topic. Of the engines you've listed I'd take the TDV8 all day every day. The 4.4 petrol is slower and almost as thirsty the S/C - so why would you?

I've got a TD6 that I'm very happy with. Haven't driven a TDV8 The extra power would be nice but was out of my price range over here. Was a very hard decision between TD6 & 4.4 V8 But as I will be doing a lot of towing went for the TD6. Thats me anyway

The main reason I would go for a 4.4 V8 even though they are thirsty, is that the early ones are extremely cheap now and on the whole have less issues than a TD6.
The TDV8 is by far a better engine-I've test driven an RR Sport TDV8, just weighing up wether to save the extra money and go for an early one or spend more, I'm going to try and look at a few over the weekend.

Also not too worried about the later seats-my bum isn't that big!!.

TDV8 for me, would love a SC but i do a lot of towing and the TDV8 has more torque. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

TDV8 is clearly better but the TD6 is a good car and currently great value for money if you can find a really nice one.

Well I own a very sweet TD6 at the minute. Sounded like an SC for a while as the bearings in the viscous fan failed but now she is super smooth for a td6, just ask RRRob as he's heard it running and liked the sound!!!

I attribute it to using biod for about 10k miles which has easily flushed the system now.

The cars can be slow off the line due to the box being rubbish. It servicing and what it's done in its life are more important.

Mine had 124k on it when I got it, 1 lady owner, never towed and very well serviced.

I've towed a few times since getting it but not very often and when compared to a tdv8 the biggest difference is the gearboxes.

The tdv8 locks up so much quicker than the td6 box and let's you use more power before the tc starts slipping again.

I am worried about tdv8 reliability as I've ears of a few going pop in ssrr's and I killed the one I had in a few days!!! Saying that I still want to move into one at some stage but mainly for the economy boost  FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I've just moved from an SC to a TDV8 and do I have regrets? None that would make me change back. Sure you know it's a diesel at times, especially at slower speeds, but seeing a tank of petrol disappearing after 240 miles in urban driving and now seeing nearly 400 for the same type of driving, now find that for some perverse reason I drive the TDV8 faster than I drie the SC!
Mine is a vogue SE and it has just about everything the SC had, so in no way do I feel that I've moved down the food chain from the "flagship" model.

If I ever have to pay for my own fuel and / or commute to work then I will 100% be joining you. A Vogue SE spec TDV8 was actually what I started my search for...but I couldn't quite stretch to the right one money-wise....then I started thinking about an S/C...drove both....loved both...could more easily afford (to buy) the S/C and then came up with a very clever way of justifying to myself (and more importantly my wife) why it was such a good idea.

But 240 miles a tank won't be much fun....jeez..  Past (too many to list, but a few favs)...
