A good idea, a JE Ebgineering is a must for a TD6, I would probably not rule it out on a TDV8 either!!. |

I just picked one over a 3.6 TDV8. ![]() I fell in love with the noise, the extra poke (and I do think the petrol is noticeably quicker than the diesel much more in real life than on paper) and there's something satisfing about buying a car that at the time (barring the Autobiography) was the best FFRR you could buy. Sorry, best is subjective. Top of the range. The TDV8 that I test drove was stunning (for a diesel) and I may have got another 8-10 mpg out of it, but I'm home based so have no commute, and as such I'm on 45p a mile every time I leave the house on business. So for me, personally, I couldn't see past that 4.2 S/C howl! For the specific spec, age and miles I was after I think the equivalent 3.6 would have been between £3k and £5k more to buy. I can understand the appeal of the SC but to me it just doesn't suit the character of the RR to drive one quickly, its more about effortless,comfortable driving, plus being brilliant off road if you enjoy it.

Couldn't agree more. I certainly didn't buy the S/C to be a 'quick' car. If I wanted a quick car I would've kept my 997 Carrera 2S or my M3! In fact my ML420CDi was much quicker too. But having the extra grunt helps with the effortless driving you talk about, it's all about that 40-70mph overtake being as rapid as possible for me. One of the things that struck me when I drove the S/C was how unbelievably quiet and unruffled it was at 'pottering' speeds. You really have to prod it to awaken the beast! Anyway, slightly off topic. Of the engines you've listed I'd take the TDV8 all day every day. The 4.4 petrol is slower and almost as thirsty the S/C - so why would you? Doesn't the later models have a narrower seat. so may depend on how big you bum is |

The main reason I would go for a 4.4 V8 even though they are thirsty, is that the early ones are extremely cheap now and on the whole have less issues than a TD6.

TDV8 for me, would love a SC but i do a lot of towing and the TDV8 has more torque. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Got my self a 4.4i love it, would have gone for a TDV8 if I can afford the 350% duty on diesel vehicles here in Sri Lanka. |

TDV8 is clearly better but the TD6 is a good car and currently great value for money if you can find a really nice one. |

Well I own a very sweet TD6 at the minute. Sounded like an SC for a while as the bearings in the viscous fan failed but now she is super smooth for a td6, just ask RRRob as he's heard it running and liked the sound!!!

I've just moved from an SC to a TDV8 and do I have regrets? None that would make me change back. Sure you know it's a diesel at times, especially at slower speeds, but seeing a tank of petrol disappearing after 240 miles in urban driving and now seeing nearly 400 for the same type of driving, now find that for some perverse reason I drive the TDV8 faster than I drie the SC!

If I ever have to pay for my own fuel and / or commute to work then I will 100% be joining you. A Vogue SE spec TDV8 was actually what I started my search for...but I couldn't quite stretch to the right one money-wise....then I started thinking about an S/C...drove both....loved both...could more easily afford (to buy) the S/C and then came up with a very clever way of justifying to myself (and more importantly my wife) why it was such a good idea.
