Can you remove the privacy glass tint ?

Hi all.

I have decided to replace the upper tailgate on mine, and get some of the bodywork I'm not happy with tidied up at the same time.

A previous bad repair on the tailgate (first owner !!) left me being hacked off every time I see it. The painters even laquered over the Range Rover letters !!

I need to obtain another top tailgate, but can only seem to find reasonable ones with the dark tint glass in. The rest of mine is not privacy glass.

Just wondered if you can remove the tint and go back to standard ? - in which case, I can get the job done with one of those.......

Thanks.

If it's a film, then yes it can be removed, but if it's factory glass then the glass itself is stained to tint it, so no.

And if it's film you'll need some heavy-duty solvents (and a lot of patience) to get the cacky glue mess off.

I removed the tints from my P38; they were done very badly. I ended up using neat cellulose thinners (I know, I know) then proper glass cleaner after the thinners had removed the mess and dried off.

How bad is your top tailgate?

I know a v good cheap body shop chappie nearby, he is having mine in a couple of weeks to tidy up the front wings after the headlamp grilles have been taken off.

I'm sure he would be able to tidy it up properly, then invest in some new lettering. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

^^^^ Wot he said!!

Done at a decent bodyshop you will never know a repair has been done. Lettering comes on pre-spaced cards at about £70 from LR.

Unless a replacement tailgate has the same paint AND paint batch codes as yours it won't match anyway.

Well, I went to a bodyshop I know in Stafford on Sat, (as I used to live near Stoke and have seen his work). Mines just bad. Looks like Stevie Wonder and Charlie Sheen fixed it last time, during a winning streak !

Its rusting from the inside, its already got filler in it. They didn't even bother sliding the rubber strip at the bottom of the window out - just sprayed upto it.

Bodyshop couldn't guarantee it wouldn't come through again in 12 months time etc......

Have seen tailgates for less than £100 on the bay, so figure I'd be much happier starting afresh.

.....even paying a bit more for a good one...........

If you PM me your bodyshops details, I can have a chat to them, and maybe call in for a second opinion when I'm near. I'm in Chesterfield, so its only around 30 mins away, if that.......

Thanks

If you got bad rust, then yes I would get a new frame. I wonder wether you could get the glass removed in one piece out of your old tailgate and refitted to your new to you second hand one.

I'll check to see if John the body shop chappie is happy for me to give out his number before I pm you if that's ok Mark. But in my experience once something has started rotting it will be like painting the forth bridge. The tail on my BMW E61 had a few blisters at 3 yr old. Sytner replaced the whole tailgate under anti rust, the new one started in the same places, they fixed that with rust profer, yet 6 months later it had started to go again. So the car went. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I had some rust taken off my upper tail gate earlier this year on the td6. I decided it would be best to use the dealers body shop. It needed stripping back, they insisted the whole door be painted to match it up and it would need new lettering on the door when finished. Whole job £120!!!.......if you think that the letters cost £50 on their own, a cheep fix really. Current: TDV8 (3.6) RRS HSE

The Forth Bridge has just finished being painted with a new type of paint and all the painters have been laid off.

I've ended up buying an upper tailgate from a 2008 model, which has factory privacy glass, so no film.

I will have to get someone to come out and swap the glass over. Think its about £40.

That, or I let the bodyshop get it done when they swap the tailgates.

I'll then prob end up with a rear screen with privacy glass, lying around the workshop.....

Thanks for your input.
